The child diagnosed on Friday is in stable condition at Royal Hobart Hospital and there is no increased risk to the community, the state health department says.
Information has been sent to family members and close contacts, including staff and other children at the Ulverstone Child Care Center in which the child is attending.
« The close contacts identified were advised to seek antibiotics to remove any meningococcal bacteria they might be carrying, » the department said in a statement Monday.
“This is to help prevent it from spreading to others. The likelihood of close contact, which will also develop the disease, is very small. ”
People who have close contact with people with meningococci don’t need to be isolated or quarantined, the department said.
The disease, which can be fatal, is mainly transmitted through droplets that are transmitted from the mouth and nose.
