Collingwood defender Tom Langdon is retiring with one year of contract remaining

COLLINGWOOD defender Tom Langdon has retired from AFL due to a degenerative knee injury.

The 26-year-old had spoken with the Pies for several months about leaving the final year of a contract for 2021 and made the decision in the past few days.

It is assumed that Langdon will be removed from the Pies list as part of the last list submission on Monday and that the Pies with 34 contracted players will remain ahead of the NAB AFL Draft.

Langdon played 89 games for the Pies in six seasons – the last in the ninth round of 2019 before succumbing to chronic cartilage damage in his knee.

He spoke openly about his battle to get back on the field in March and has played a handful of pies scratch matches this season while not playing AFL mid-year.

« It’s been a difficult eight months to be honest, wrapping my head around this being an option, 25 years old and young and reasonably healthy.

« That was a difficult reality, but at this point there is a lot of water under the bridge and it feels pretty good so I’m pretty optimistic.

« The club has given me great support all along, they have never pushed me. We’re both trying our best right now to get up and play because of course I love Collingwood and I love AFL football. That is the goal. I think we are on the right track to some extent. «

Trainer Nathan Buckley told AFL. com. Also in February the pies would leave no stone unturned in Langdon’s recovery.

Langdon will be most remembered for his fearless defense and performance in the losing Pies Grand Final 2018 against West Coast, where he received the Norm Smith Medal.

At the age of 19, he was won by the Sandringham Dragons in selection no. 1 withdrawn. 65 in the NAB AFL Draft 2013.

The Pies delisted Rupert Wills and Flynn Appleby last week after reaching an agreement with Dayne Beams for the last two years of his contract.
