The esteemed football administrator, who has twice headed Collingwood’s football program, made a decision after a difficult year for all football workers to study the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and organize football in hubs where they are 64 Years was the right time to retire.
The decision is not unexpected as Walsh had been thinking about his future for more than 12 months and was considering an option to retire part-time.
Collingwood will now look for a substitute football manager with internal options, like Marcus Wagner, a strong candidate, along with Prime Minister Nick Naxwell, who served in football administration and leadership for the club.
Wagner, who directed the VFL program and finished second after Walsh, acted as a temporary replacement for the general manager of the football role before Walsh returned to the club in 2016.
Wash had two stints at Collingwood as director of football, the first for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013, during which he led one of the club’s most successful periods, culminating in the 2010 Premier League flag. He then returned to the club in 2016.
Walsh also held senior positions at Carlton, Fitzroy and North Melbourne, where he was the club’s general manager. He’s one of the most accomplished administrators in the game.
Essendon is also looking for a new football boss after firing Dan Richardson and said they would be looking for a candidate who preferably has senior coaching experience.
Collingwood is not looking for similar traits in a replacement and will investigate internal and external candidates.
Collingwood has had a difficult postseason, with aggressive list decisions to lower the salary cap, ending with the departure of older players Adam Treloar, Jaidyn Stephenson and Tom Phillips.
While these decisions worried many fans because communication of the reasons for the list decisions was chaotic, the Walsh retirement is not connected.
