The Detroit Pistons continue to make their list, and this time around, that’s a name many basketball fans know.
LiAngelo Ball, the brother of two of the most recent top 3 NBA draft picks and the son of the outspoken LaVar Ball, has signed a one-year, non-guaranteed contract with the Pistons.
The Athletic was the first to report the deal. The contract contains a clause to Appendix 10 that applies to the minimum salary and can be converted into a two-way deal that allows the player to switch between the NBA team and their G League partner. If Ball is skipped after training camp, he can join Grand Rapids Drive and receive a bonus.
Ball, 22, spent part of last season with Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s G League partner. He only played one game before the season ended because of the pandemic.
Ball’s older brother Lonzo was No.. 2 overall selection in 2017 NBA draft and now plays for the New Orleans Pelicans. His younger brother LaMelo was voted third overall by the Charlotte Hornets in this year’s design.
LiAngelo’s professional career included a stint with his father’s Junior Basketball Association, an alternative to college basketball. He was the league’s all-star game co-MVP and the 2019 league finals MVP. But he suffered an ankle injury and had to undergo shorter surgery afterwards.
LiAngelo, a 6-foot-5 winger, was a three-star recruit in the 2017 UCLA class. In November of that year, he and two other newcomers were arrested for allegedly shoplifting sunglasses while the team was traveling to Shanghai.
The three were soon released but later suspended from the team indefinitely. Ball left UCLA the next month. He then played the rest of the basketball season in Lithuania.
