Round 1: Let’s go! Joyce reached out to begin. Ring looks small with these two guys. Dubois right hand brushes Joyce’s jaw. Both guys move their hands from the start. Joyce misses a slow right hand. Joyce pulls back and avoids a 1-2. Dubois with one push, he remains at a distance until now. Jab from Joyce. Another one. The Joyce Jab works early, one on the body. Dubois comes up late in the round. Dubois with a hook on his body, Joyce with another small push upwards. Joyce 10-9

Round 2: Dubois comes out more aggressively to start the second and shakes Joyce’s right hand a little. Joyce tries to sit down, but Dubois is now applying pressure. Dubois’ right hand may have hummed Joyce a little again, just a little. He doesn’t wiggle around, but he feels those shots like anyone would. Dubois really set the pace in the first minute of the lap. Dubois calms down a little and now Joyce pulls the thrust out again and disturbs the rhythm. Dubois right hand! He is now looking for openings and walks over to Joyce while they are tangled tightly. Joyce pulls back a little, Dubois comes in with a double push, but the right doesn’t get there to follow. Dubois is now taking advantage of Joyce’s slowness. Another right from Dubois. Joyce is just trying to make this round now. It’s not that he’s badly injured, but this wasn’t his round at all. Dubois is missing just one right. Dubois 10-9, 19-19

Round 3: Let’s see if Dubois pushes again. He’s – good right hands, an uppercut, and now Dubois is throwing big shots! The left hook goes in and shakes Joyce! Joyce is just too slow but so far he’s holding up and that means Dubois is draining energy and the results are yet to be seen. Joyce works around in the distance but doesn’t do much. Dubois may be trying to lure him, get him to lean in and walk on something. Dubois now with one push. Joyce flicks his out (I mean something like a guy who can be this tall), Dubois has a stink on his. Dubois with another at the top. Closer than in the second round, both have done their work. I’ll take Joyce’s steady thrust, but Dubois landed the more effective shots. Joyce 10-9, 29-28

Round 4: Joyce’s work isn’t nice, it never is, but he still « scores » with this push. Dubois threw the heavier punches but didn’t come home here at the moment. Joyce, who doubles the thrust and starts moving his head even more, could get Dubois out of his rhythm. Joyce throws a right but falls into a clinch. Joyce’s push really controls the range now. This is exactly what he wants to do, the exact game plan must have been – jab, control as much early as possible, survive early energy, make it into the later rounds. Ian John Lewis, who is tightly entangled, dissolves them. The right that Joyce occasionally lets go is very slow. Dubois marks Joyce’s thrust but lands his right hand late in the round. Joyce is still there for me. Joyce 10-9, 39-37

Round 5: Dubois swells around the left eye and comes into this round. He doesn’t look completely confident or has sat down in the corner, not relaxed at all. Quick break to clean up some water in the corner that is currently running. Dubois shoots over the top after a thrust with his right hand and knocks off Joyce’s cinder block skull. Both tried to get the thrust going, Joyce tried to go on, Dubois tried to establish his more. Dubois is starting to look like he’s getting things started a little, but Joyce also remains calm. Dubois is trying to get his head moving, probably a good idea. Dubois right hand and another. This is a better lap for him than the first and last, and probably even the third, which was closer than the first and fourth. Dubois moved his hands and also looked a little towards the body with his right hand. Much better for Dubois, Joyce didn’t control the pace this time. Dubois 10-9, Joyce 48-47

Round 6: I’m not saying it will gass him up to the point during the fight that it makes all the difference, but Dubois definitely snorts in the corner between rounds. Dubois comes back with his right hand, this time he misses and falls into a clinch. Good little one straight from Joyce, a reverse shot that Dubois definitely felt could be seen on his face. Dubois flies and is absent, Joyce starts dictating again. Little straight out of the Dubois clinch. Joyce holds on there and muscles Dubois over the ring to the ropes. Joyce is working on the push out of range again. This eye gradually closes Dubois that Joyce Jab is no joke. Right hand of Dubois. Dubois with another left to his body as Joyce throws his right. He didn’t focus on it, but he got it in some. Very close by and the Eye of Dubois tells the story of Joyce’s thrust. Just take this one, Joyce, but Dubois had an argument. Joyce 10-9, 58-56

Round 7: Dubois catches Joyce with a good shot and shakes him at the start of the round! But Joyce remains calm, holds on and returns within reach. There’s no doubt that Dubois can hurt Joyce, we’ve seen it a couple of times now. But Joyce was tough and also smart at avoiding large storms. Dubois performed well in the first half of this round. Joyce tries to return to the thrust and clearly moves away from Dubois ‘right hand, which is Dubois’ main weapon of choice. That eye is almost closed, there is no way of seeing much of it. Dubois with a good double strike. Joyce’s right hand as Dubois walks in looking for a power shot himself. Dubois goes to the body and Joyce hushes up. Dubois’ right hand doesn’t quite get there. Joyce looks more comfortable late this round, like the fresher guy. But Dubois really tried very hard and made this round. Dubois 10-9, Joyce 67-66

Lap 8: Joyce tries to keep the thrust moving to start this lap. Dubois is pushing better now, and that was a big, big help to him. Never underestimate the thrust, we’ve seen this in different ways on both sides of this fight. Just to the right of Joyce. Triple thrust from Joyce. Another push from Joyce as he also slips on Dubois’ right. Dubois receives some warnings from referee Ian John Lewis that he is lost; no « hard warnings », but notes from the side that do not yet interfere with the action. In fact, there are no major disruptions to the action overall. Joyce has a better round here, working Dubois out and reading, perhaps rightly, that Dubois put a lot of energy into the seventh. Nothing amazing, just work. Dubois with a push and a right hand. Joyce lets go of his right and pumps the thrust even more. Ends a bit chippy and throws on the bell. I clearly liked Joyce’s thrust and speed. Joyce 10-9, 77-75

Dubois (23) and Joyce (35) are at very different career points and have had very different ways to get here in their boxing lives, but they have roughly the same pro experience and go with what could be dramatic competition.
