World News – AU – Hilaria Baldwin now accuses other people of « misrepresenting » her legacy

. . Hilaria Baldwin has come under fire for allegedly faking a Spanish accent, having two different names, and pretending she's from Spain when she's actually from Boston.

. .

From Amy Schumer’s Instagram joke to Alec Baldwin’s request to check sources, here’s what you need to know.

Hilaria Baldwin got a lot of attention this weekend when internet pundits suggested that yoga teacher, writer, and actor Alec Baldwin’s wife might be feigning a Spanish accent. The controversy did not end there, however; Hilaria came under fire for using two different names and allegedly pretending to be Spanish despite being born in Boston. This, of course, sparked a firestorm on social media that left many people demanding answers about their true identities.

« I was born in Boston and grew up with my family between Massachusetts and Spain, » the 36-year-old mother of five wrote alongside a detailed video explanation. « My parents and siblings live in Spain and I made the decision to live here in the USA. « But when you’re trying to catch up on the controversy surrounding Hilaria Baldwin’s identity, it’s understandable that you’re feeling a little lost. A lot has happened since the first tweet thread sparked a number of replies on the internet and from the Baldwins themselves. The following is a guide to everything you need to know about one of the most bizarre controversies of a very bizarre year.

This very unexpected story began with comedian Amy Schumer reposting a photo of Baldwin holding her son Eduardo as a joke on her own Instagram wearing lingerie. « Gene and I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, » said Schumer to her repost. « Enjoy with all of the family members speaking to you this year. «

Unfortunately, the joke didn’t go well with Baldwin, who said it was « out of control » in a video response on Instagram. « And while her message about body inclusivity was positive, it was almost completely lost when fans noticed that her voice in the video appeared to be missing the Spanish accent she had used in previous interviews.

« You have to admire Hilaria Baldwin’s decade-long grip posing as a Spanish person, » wrote Twitter user @lenibriscoe at the beginning of her Twitter thread, which was full of snippets of Hilaria’s « false Spanish accent ». « However, it was a video from Hilaria asking what the English word for ‘cucumber’ was during an old cooking segment on the Today show that got the most attention.

« She’s a total scam, » tweeted one person. « Hilaria Baldwin, who pretends not to know how to say pickle in English, is the greatest moment in the unintended comedy of the 21st century. Century, « added someone else. Others came to their defense, stating that it is natural to mix up words when you speak multiple languages. « I grew up bilingual, » wrote another person on Twitter. « Sometimes I really can’t remember the name of a thing in English, but I know it in Italian and my brain has to search the old Rolodex until I find it. The desperation Twitter folks have for tearing people down is pretty sad really. «

If you didn’t think things could get more bizarre, think again. Although she confirmed that she was indeed born in Boston in the recently released video in which she dispelled the rumors, the author’s professional bios stated otherwise at one point. According to the Daily Beast, Hilaria’s IMDb description recently stated that she was « on March 6th. January 1984 in Mallorca, Spain when Hilaria Lynn Thomas was born « although her place of birth has since changed on the site to Boston. According to page 6 of the biography on her agency’s speakers page, it also states that she was born in Mallorca, Spain, and grew up in Boston. In addition, a 2016 interview with Hola! The magazine claimed that “Hilaria, who was born in Spain, saw to it that her children were raised using their native Spanish, Spanish. «

Of course, all of this would seem perfectly normal if Spanish were their first language, but it doesn’t seem to be. According to page 6, her parents have lived in Mallorca since 2011, but previously they lived in Massachusetts. « Hilary’s Google results say she was born to a Spanish mother, and yet this is where her very American-sounding mother is talking about growing up in Massachusetts, » tweeted @lenibriscoe alongside a video of Hilarya’s mother, Dr. . Kathryn Hayward talks about her alma mater.

We know what you’re thinking: if Hilaria is not Spanish on her maternal side, the paternal family may be from Spain. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case either. « Hilary’s grandfather was a college professor at Longmeadow in the 1960s, » @lenibriscoe wrote. The man’s obituary even states that the family’s presence in Vermont « occurred before the American Revolution. «

Baldwin’s private school, the Cambridge School of Weston, lists Baldwin as a 2002 graduate, and several of her former classmates have come forward to confirm that she actually attended the school while growing up. « I know Hillary Hayward-Thomas from Cambridge School of Weston, MA, » wrote one person in a review of Hilaria’s podcast. « She didn’t have an accent at the time and didn’t change her name to Hilaria. Because she is not Spanish! «

However, on a recent appearance on the Momtruths podcast in April 2020, the yoga teacher said she moved to the United States when she was 19 to attend NYU.

On Sunday, Dec. . 27, Hilaria responded directly to the controversy on Instagram, confirming that she was born in Boston but was split between Massachusetts and Spain. « We celebrate both cultures in our home, » she wrote in the headline of an Instagram video. She also addressed her change of name in the clip: « When I was growing up I used the name Hilary in this country and Hilaria in Spain, and my parents called me Hilaria. «

« A handful of years before I met Alec, I consolidated the two, » she continued. She also seemed to be referring to the Gherkin Gate in the video. « I’m the person who, when I’ve spoken a lot of Spanish, tend to mix them up, and when I speak a lot of English, I mix it up, » she said. « I try to speak more clearly in each language, but sometimes I screw it up. «

On Wednesday, December. In 30 the New York Times published an interview with Hilaria in which she again clarified her identity – and accused others of « misrepresenting » her. « It’s very surreal, » she told the newspaper about the controversy over her legacy. « There’s nothing I’m doing wrong, and I think there’s a difference between hiding and creating a border. «

Baldwin went on to state that she was « very clear » about who she is and that it is other people who were not paying attention. « I was born in Boston, » she said. « I’ve spent time in Boston and in Spain. My family now lives in Spain. I moved to New York when I was 19 and have lived here ever since. I feel like I’ve spent 10 years sharing this story over and over again. And now it doesn’t seem enough. «

According to Hilaria, Spain is a place where her father made « deep, deep, deep bonds » that indicated that her family would travel there at least once a year. However, the yoga teacher declined to say how long each visit was and whether or not they were simply taking a vacation. « I think it would be crazy to plan everything so tightly, » said Baldwin. « You know, sometimes a school was involved. Sometimes it was vacation. It was such a mixture, mishmash, is that the right word? Like a mixture of different things. «

She also revealed that for her home was always where her parents are. And in her view, she was not deliberately deceiving when she said she was going to « go home » while referring to Spain. « My parents will be at home, » she continued. « When my parents move to China, I go to China and say, ‘I’m going home. ‘ »

Although the world now knows that Baldwin and her family are indeed from Boston, the podcast host wants people to understand that Spain was and always will be a huge part of their lives. « My family, this is where you have decided to spend your life, » she added. « I guarantee you that they will live there and die there. This is their home and that is because this is nothing new. Nobody hung a card on the wall, threw an arrow at it and said, “Oh, Spain sounds good. ‘ »

On Sunday, Dec. . 27, Alec Baldwin defended his wife in a video he posted on Instagram and urged followers to check their sources before spreading misinformation. « There are things that have been said lately about people I love who are very dear to my heart that are ridiculous, » he said, referring to the allegations that his wife is guilty of cultural appropriation. « The majority of what has been said is wrong, and some of it is so spectacularly wrong, and they said it about people I love. «

The following day, Alec redoubled his defense, this time in response to an article by People writer Ale Russian entitled « Why the Hilaria-Baldwin Scandal is Painful for Immigrants, including myself. « . « Russian called out Hilaria’s » false exaggerated accent while so many immigrants, especially POC, are ostracized, marginalized and ridiculed for it, « a reaction from Alec. « Wrong? Exaggerated? Picked up an accent as an adult? She lived in Spain for many years as a child, » he tweeted. « She lived in both places. « (This came after he told an Instagram follower to » fuck himself « for accusing his wife of being a cheater. )

Hilaria’s stepdaughter Ireland Baldwin made her support for her stepmother clear in the comments on her Instagram video statement. « I wish people had a chance to know you and know your story the way I do, rather than from a fictional nine-hour Instagram story, » the model wrote. « I think you are an amazing mother and inspiration. « And before Ireland confirmed that Hilaria actually knew what a cucumber was, she went on to say how lucky she is to have it as a stepmother. « I love you and I find it really sad that people have the time to play detective, invent a lot of lies and invent a lot of truths to go with a story, » she wrote.

Ireland went to Instagram Story shortly after and called the backlash « pathetic ». « She said in a video, » It’s the holidays and people are depressed, people are going through a lot. I know that I personally go through a lot. « The model went on. « And the last thing we really have to do is screw up and gossip about something that’s so, so stupid. And about someone nobody really knows. « She repeated that her stepmother is a » wonderful « and » caring person « . «
