World News – AU – In short, Meredith’s fireworks are helping Hobart stay undefeated

. .

A late surge in the Adelaide Strikers made it an exciting end, but the Hobart Hurricanes held their nerve in BBL | 10
The match in one tweet: Short and Meredith are playing match-winning hands, but Hurricanes get all-powerful fear of the record high on the final wicket

The results: Hobart Hurricanes 7-174 (Short 72, Jacks 34; Agar 2-28) defeated Adelaide Strikers 9-163 (Worrall 62 *, Briggs 35 *, Renshaw 33; Meredith 2-30, Botha 2-20 )

The Fear: What started as fanciful tail slogging turned into a record last wicket partnership that terrified the Hobart Hurricanes all over the world.

No.. 8 Daniel Worrall and No.. 11 Danny Briggs hit the 9-102 result and the Adelaide Strikers took 73 of 34 deliveries which seemed an impossible goal.

But Worrall rose to a remarkable half-century with 28 balls (more on that below) when he doubled his BBL career while Danny Briggs played a series of notable punches that earned his place at No. . 11 watch the unlikely duo pull the Strikers to the brink of extraordinary victory.

Briggs, who has had a prime century in England county cricket, swept D’Arcy Short backwards twice in a row and then hit him for six (the second for the left-handed) so they only needed 25 on the final two overs.

Death bowlers Nathan Elllis and Scott Boland held their nerve to scoop a win in nine runs, but not before they’d seriously sweated the Hurricanes and beat Worrall and Briggs 61 undefeated runs – the top 10. Wicket stand in the history of the BBL.

The hero: After a rare duck at the start of the BBL10, D’Arcy Short resumed normal transmission with an excellent 72 of 48 balls that the Hurricanes fired to a match-winning 5-174.

The left-hander got on 23. a life and made the strikers pay; After hitting just 38 of his first 40 deliveries, he exploded with 6 6 4 6 2 4 and 6 (more on his attack against Rashid Khan below) before being sacked by Wes Agar in the first Over of the Power Surge.

It was a classic short inning, and while he longed for an even bigger record, his quick finish triggered the lower order of canes to see them hit 79 of their last seven overs while he was 63 Runs opened up, Will Jacks suggests the pair could be a handful this summer.

The Roller Coaster: It was an incredible Adelaide Strikers debut for Daniel Worrall, who managed to throw two successful power play overs, put a major hook on shorts, move away from bowling attack and a career-best T20 -Score almost reached led his side to an extraordinary win.

Worrall, traded by the Melbourne Stars in the off-season, conceded just nine runs from his first two field-up overs, but soon cursed himself when he had a direct chance at a fine leg against short with the Star noticed dough on Jan..

That was a very costly failure, and after grabbing a virgin wicket in blue while playing Mac Wright for a bowling, his final was in more pain. Worrall aimed at the block hole and missed with a waist-high full throw, resulting in a free kick that Tim David hit for six.

What should have been his last ball was another ball above his waist that didn’t ricochet, which meant that referees had banned him from attacking for dangerous bowling.

His innings were even more entertaining. During round nine, after the Strikers lost six wickets before passing fifty, Worrall smashed a six from his fourth ball to get the Adelaide within striking distance of the bash boost point. With three required from the following delivery – the last of the 10th. over – he could only manage one.

He didn’t give up there, however, and smashed a couple of sixes and seven fours in an unlikely cameo that doubled his career as a BBL player and set a new record in partnership with the last wicket.

The support cast: Riley Meredith, one of the fastest bowlers in the BBL, sent four overs of enemy fast bowling and was an integral part of stumbling the Strikers on 6-49, effectively ending the game before halfway through their chase.

It didn’t take long for the runabout to strike and caught Jono Wells with his second ball for a golden duck before sending a snort at 152 km / h past the helmet of his substitute Ryan Gibson.

« Renshaw was on his way to a quick single, but Meredith hit Gibson over the wicket and kicked the ball in the stump to get it.

Rashid Khan knocked another fast Meredith bouncer off the next ball that nearly secured a Hurricanes win.

The Fight: D’Arcy Short vs Rashid Khan was rightly billed as the competition in that game, and the two BBL stars didn’t disappoint when it came to box office entertainment.

Some teams in the past have simply tried to negate Rashid’s wicket abilities by just pushing him around for his four overs. Short went the opposite way, targeting the star leg spinner the third time he passed.

After Colin Ingram put him on strike, Short cracked 24 runs from the remaining five supplies against Rashid when he swept him for three sixes.

While Rashid still contributed with Peter Handscomb’s key wicket and a terrific frontier catch, the 38 runs he conceded are more used than the strikers and have brought the hurricanes to insurmountable levels.

The catch: Rashid might have had an expensive afternoon with the ball, but the Afghan spin wizard was brilliant on the field as he calmly kept his balance with that borderline effort to see Colin Ingram’s back.

The consolation: Matthew Renshaw had been poached by the Brisbane Heat after an erupting BBL season last summer, and the left-handed’s 33 would have encouraged the Adelaide Strikers, who have been well-recruiting them.

Renshaw hid from nothing as he did his best to keep up the strike rate as wickets fell around him and hit a pair of sixes before joining the procession to exit visitors 7-78.

The ski goggles: In his first BBL game as captain, Peter Siddle also presented some extravagant glasses in addition to the pale blonde hair that he proudly showed on the field without a cap.

The next stop: In a strange peculiarity of the draw, these two teams will play against each other again in two days. Tuesday night’s game is the first for this summer at Launceston’s UTAS Stadium.

Adelaide Strikers XI: Phil Salt, Jake Weatherald, Matt Renshaw, Harry Nielsen (week), Jon Wells, Ryan Gibson, Rashid Khan, Danny Briggs, Peter Siddle (c), Daniel Worrall, Wes Agar.
