Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso claims Victor Osimhen isn’t smiling after missing the Europa League trip to AZ Alkmaar.
The 21-year-old suffered in the qualifier for the African Cup of Nations in Nigeria against Sierra Leone on 13. A shoulder injury on November 11th after scoring a goal in the 4-4 draw at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
As a result, he has missed Napoli’s last three games in all competitions, including a 4-0 win over Roma in Serie A and a 2-0 win over Rijeka in the Europa League.
The Parthenopeans left Naples for Alkmaar on Wednesday and Gattuso has revealed how Osimhen felt after leaving his 20-strong traveling party.
« It bothers me to see him angry and not smile, » said Gattuso, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. “He’s upset and that’s normal. We have to calm him down again, we hope that he will heal as soon as possible. ”
Osimhen has scored two goals in six Serie A games since arriving from Lille this summer. However, Gattuso reserved the praise for Dries Mertens when he scored his first goal in European competition this season.
« He knows he didn’t score, but he’s crucial to our team spirit. It helps keep us together and it should improve. «
Napoli are at the top of Group F with nine points after four games – two points above second-placed Real Sociedad and hosts AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.
Gattuso has warned his team against complacency as they look to secure their place in the Europa League of the last 16.
“Quality wins some games, but not all. If you want to win, you need a head and a heart. We play good and bad together, tomorrow will be a tough game. I haven’t decided on a formation, I’ll take things into account. «
