Jack de Belin’s litigation reportedly coincided with the deposed NRL star, who had surgery for testicular cancer.
The shock news was reported by News Corp.. The striker from St. George Illawarra was awaiting retrial in Sydney for alleged rape after a jury in Wollongong failed to deliver a verdict in the first trial.
De Belin has not played a game in the past two seasons after resigning from the NRL on allegations related to an incident in December 2018.
The 29-year-old is reported to have found a lump in his testicle in early 2020 and underwent keyhole surgery in September – two months before his trial began in November – which was considered successful.
« He is a very strong-willed man and his focus remains on clearing his name in court. «
De Belin trained with the Dragons for the last two seasons, but manager Anthony Griffin said he wouldn’t do so in the short term as they prepare for the 2021 season.
Griffin spoke for the first time as a kite coach on Thursday, saying the former de Belin home striker will not be returning to training in the short term.
De Belin’s presence at practice has been cited as a distraction for the misfiring side in the past, but Griffin said it wouldn’t be an issue for the next season.
« I personally respect that, we have no control over it so this will be his main focus right now, not training with the soccer team.
« He was in a lawsuit, this is probably the farthest thing on his mind. «
In the last two seasons there has been a cloud hanging over the dragons who had their best striker in top physical condition during training but could not play.
It’s a situation that threatens to spoil the 2021 Dragons season as well, with de Belin’s retrial set to begin in April. If found not guilty, the first game he could play will be on round nine.
The NRL is believed to have offered the club salary cap waiver for de Belin’s replacement while he is unavailable after agreeing to a three-year contract with the Dragons.
This contract has yet to be registered by the NRL and until the legal process is completed he will only receive a percentage of his pay.
