Javier Mascherano has responded to claims that Barcelona have asked him to pull out of retirement to heal the center-back’s exposed crisis from Mundo Deportivo.
Gerard Pique’s injury against Atletico Madrid has dominated the news in Barcelona lately, forcing the club to bring on another center-back.
With Samuel Umtiti and Ronald Araujo both injured, Clement Lenglet is the club’s only healthy central defender.
Mascherano has just retired as a professional but it was recently rumored that the Argentine took a call from the club asking him to return to Camp Nou for one final dance.
Mascherano responded to a tweet related to information from Eduardo Inda in El Chiringuito that sparked the rumor and asked him to decline it.
Mascherano spent eight years in Catalonia and won five La Liga titles, five Copa del Reys, three Spanish Super Cups, two Champions League, two European Super Cups and two Club World Cups.
Born in San Lorenzo, he also represented River Plate, Corinthians, West Ham United, Liverpool, Hebei China Fortune and Estudiantes de la Plata. Mascherano represented his beloved Argentina at five Copa Americas and four world championships.
Apart from his trophy-filled years at Camp Nou, Mascherano won the Clausura with River in 2004 and the Brasileirao with Corinthians a year later. With Argentina he won Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2008. Mascherano is expected to go into coaching.
