Lille returned to the top of Ligue 1 on Sunday after leading Paris Saint-Germain to an uninspired goalless draw that didn’t live up to their pre-game record.

Lille occupy first place in the top French league in Lyon due to the goal difference after a game in which only a handful of shots were on goal and very few incidents.

PSG are one point down in third place after failing to break their territorial dominance. They were not attacked without Neymar and Mauro Icardi, among others, while Kylian Mbappe started on the bench after reportedly struggling with a thigh blow.

Marseille are five points behind the leaders after a 1-1 draw with Reims on Saturday, despite Andre Villas-Boas’s side having two games against their title rivals.

PSG were the stronger side in a gloomy first half with no shot on goal until Mike Maignan turned 42. Minute easily picked up Moise Kean’s weak header.

Lille, sold on Friday to Callisto, a subsidiary of mutual fund Merlyn Partners, struggled to gain a foothold in the biggest game in their league campaign to date.

PSG’s dominance continued into the second phase but lacked the usual creative spark and the highlight of the final stages was Presnel Kimpembe’s great tackle against Burak Yilmaz, with Lille heading for goal at break.

Kimpembe appeared to have injured an Achilles tendon when he shot over the gate and hobbled 12 minutes from time.

Mbappe was substituted on a minute before Kimpembe’s challenge, but had done very little in the time he had, and the curtain soon fell on a memorable encounter between two tired-looking teams.

German striker Kevin Volland scored his sixth Ligue 1 goal as Monaco battled for a 1-0 win at bottom club Dijon to score a loss in three games.

Former Bayer Leverkusen striker Volland scored in the 15th. Minute the only goal. Both teams saw later attempts by VAR excluded.

« After four wins in a row and three losses straight away, the most important thing was victory, » said coach Niko Kovac.

« It wasn’t the best Monaco but we showed a lot of character and that’s the best way to move forward. «

Rennes are two points ahead of Monaco in fifth place after taking a 3-0 win at Lorient, who is second after their eleventh loss of the season.

Damien Da Silva opened the match in the middle of the first half with a deflected shot from close range and Benjamin Bourigeaud doubled the away team’s lead with a nice first goal 20 minutes from time.

Martin Terrier finished six minutes later when he switched on from the left before rolling home past Paul Nardi.

One point ahead of Lorient in 18th place is Nimes, who got away from Saint-Etienne in a 2-2 draw.

Elsewhere, Montpellier missed fourth place when they drew 2-2 in Brest.
