2. T20I Report: Glenn Phillips beat a New Zealander’s fastest 20-year century when the Black Caps made the West Indies an imposing 239 running target if they wanted to save the series in Sunday’s second game at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

Phillips beat his century with 46 deliveries, the 10th fastest in the world and one ball faster than Colin Munro’s previous New Zealand record.

By the time he was dismissed on the penultimate delivery of the New Zealand innings, Phillips had scored 108 of 51 balls with eight sixs and ten fours, and was represented with Devon Conway on 184 runs.

The West Indies, which lost the first game by five wickets and needed a win to keep the three game series alive, chose to roll first if they won the throw.

Skipper Kieron Pollard believed the cloudy conditions would support the side field first after rain delayed the start by 15 minutes.

The New Zealand openers Tim Seifert (18) and Martin Guptill (34) were rarely tested, however, as they raced to 49 in 34 deliveries before both fell in quick succession.

Conway and Phillips wasted no time re-establishing the innings, bringing the Black Caps to 84 for two at halftime before Phillips opened at six and two fours ahead of Keemo Paul.

After a 20 minute break in the rain, he kept hitting the limit and got a life at 88 when he buckled up a tall full throw at the limit only to be reminded when reps showed there was no ball above waist height.
