A sensational five-wicket move by Afghan mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman was undone for Brisbane against Hobart by a dramatic Big Bash League loss on the final ball.

Mujeeb took the all-time all-time heat bowler numbers – and the fourth best in BBL history – by dropping 5-15 from his four overs in the gabba when Brisbane sacked Hobart for 150.

But his efforts were in vain when the heat ended on 8-149 after 20 overs and Mark Steketee left the last ball to create a tie that would have forced the game to a super-over.

Third umpire Phillip Gillespie ruled Steketee’s bat was close to the kink when it was grounded before leaping into the air when Colin Ingram’s throw hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

Despite uncertainty as to whether Steketee’s bat had actually missed out, Heat captain Jimmy Peirson took the call after watching a replay after the game.

« I just had a quick look at it . . . and it looked like the bat ricocheted off the line, « said Peirson.

« I’d really like to look at it really well, but we have to look inward, we can’t blame it or rant about it.

« We got ourselves into a situation where we should have brought the bat game to bed, we didn’t. «

The first Twenty20 five-wicket move in 19-year-old Mujeeb’s career surpassed West Indian Samuel Badree’s 5:22 win over Melbourne Stars in 2016 as best bowling by a Heat player.

His effort, which included three wickets in four balls in the penultimate run of the Hurricanes innings, is the best return in the BBL since Dan Christians 5-14 for Hobart v Adelaide in 2017.

Chasing 151 to claim a second win against the Hurricanes in four days, the heat plummeted to 3-8 in a disastrous start.

A 50-year partnership between Max Bryant (32 of 21) and English importer Lewis Gregory (29 of 27) supported the innings.

Second-player James Bazley, who scored an unbeaten 31 with four wickets in his debut win over the Hurricanes on Sunday, put the win in sight as it took the heat seven to win the final.

Scott Boland (2-18) limited the heat to just five of his first five deliveries, and when Ingram brought up his exploits for the final ball, Bazley stopped at 49 and was not absent.

« It was really exciting and, of course, an exciting end to a pretty crazy game, » said Singapore international Tim David, who fired a 17-ball 36 late in the Hobart innings.

« I have a feeling that most batters will be a bit disappointed when they leave a couple of runs from both sides but defend seven in the final game and even the guys who end up one from that end to end did really hard job. « Limit, yeah, it was amazing. «
