The year 2020 was a milestone in our lives. Corona has changed a lot in our lives and some of it isn’t that bad. The best thing that happened to us was that we started eating homemade food and we started eating with our family. Another important lesson we all learned was the importance of maintaining good health. 2020 is finally coming to an end and we are looking forward to a new beginning where we can return to « normal » life. So let’s not make unrealistic resolutions, but rather promise ourselves to focus on our health and well-being.

A healthy person is someone who is mentally, physically, and spiritually healthy. So in this New Year we can focus on our whole body and get healthy from head to toe.

1. Start small: change is the hardest part. Don’t set hard-to-reach goals, be realistic and start with the easiest step. Remember that the first step is the most important. So, set yourself small achievable goals like closing your kitchen at 9 p.m. or sitting down walking every half hour, or even eating two fresh fruits a day. It takes us 21 days to change a habit and if we follow it for three months it becomes our lifestyle. Take your time, it is more important to learn what you need to change and to get started.

2. Eating right has a huge impact on our health. Try to eat at the same time each day. It will help you manage your hunger / satiety cycle more efficiently. To do this, we need to work together, whether at work or at home. We need to have fixed meal times based on our solar clock.

3. Eat Right: This is a place where everyone is confused because of the amount of information. It’s actually very simple: good food is anything that is fresh, seasonal, local, and traditionally part of your grandmothers and mothers’ cuisine. Most of the information on social media is based on the western lifestyle, which is good for them, but our traditional foods, eating habits and cooking methods are the healthiest for us. We just have to choose the right quality and quantity of oils.

4. Serving sizes: This depends on the individual’s activity levels, age, gender, and health goals. Even the healthiest food is good until it is consumed in the amounts the body needs. Extra never meant kindness again. Find out how much you need and stick with it. The occasional samosa or burger won’t put you off your health goals either, if you understand them.

5. Leave the scales behind: I prefer to measure my patient’s success by knowing whether the energy levels are better and whether the body is feeling healthier. Weight is an important risk factor for lifestyle diseases, but not the be-all and end-all. . A sense of well-being, adopting and sticking to healthier habits is a better way to measure success. The weight will go down as everything comes together more regularly. If you have to, weigh yourself once every 15 days.

Weight is an important risk factor for lifestyle diseases, but it is not the be-all and end-all. .

6. A healthy mind is an important part of health. So make sure you sleep 6-8 hours a day. This is vital to a healthy body. The brain needs rest and sleep regularly to relieve stress. Learn to switch off from your normal day for at least an hour. You can meditate, pursue a hobby, read a book or listen to music. The « me-time » will help refresh your brain and prepare it for new challenges without compromising health.

7. Daily Exercise: You don’t have to go to the gym or start bodybuilding or run a marathon. Just half an hour of brisk walk is enough to be physically active throughout the day. NEAT (or Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) plays a huge role in overall calorie burning. Every time you take the stairs, walk around after 30 minutes of sitting, make calls, iron clothes, wash, and do other household chores, it all contributes to a healthier person. Like I said, start slowly, but think about your goals and achieve them one step at a time.

Meeting health goals is important to me, but more importantly, the journey or changes you make become part of your lifelong lifestyle. You live your whole life in your body and make it a happy place.
