Toyota New Zealand has confirmed that an overseas recall regarding possible braking problems for certain models of Hilux utes and Fortuner SUVs also applies in New Zealand.
The recall is related to the Hilux and Fortuner shared brake booster unit which is known to have potential leakage and result in an inconsistent brake
pressure. The recall affects Hilux and Fortuner models built between March 2018 and May 2019.
A total of 3,183 vehicles were recalled in New Zealand. Toyota New Zealand is in the process of contacting each affected Hilux owner for repairs.
« Toyota New Zealand is calling because of a potential problem with brake booster assembly 3. 183 vehicles back. The Toyota Hilux and are affected
Fortuner was manufactured between March 2018 and May 2019, ”reads its local statement.
“This is a precautionary measure as the vacuum operated brake booster may leak and provide less brake assistance. The repair
is filled out free of charge by the Toyota branches and takes approx. 3. 5 hours to complete. ”
The message follows a callback from over 20. 000 Hilux and Fortuner vehicles in Australia, although the recall there concerns vehicles made in a different vehicle
Timeframe (June 2018 to December 2018) and has another problem – one related to the piston.
« Inside the brake booster of the vehicles involved, the strength of the resin piston can deteriorate due to incorrect molding conditions during production. »
Toyota Australia said.
“In this case, repeated use of the brake pedal can cause the piston to break, possibly leading to a loss of braking assistance and therefore increasing
the braking distance of the vehicle. ”
