Nicholas Pooran’s brilliant half-century wasn’t enough when Melbourne Stars fell with a ball to a narrow one-wicket loss, their first 2020-21 Big Bash League loss.
Pooran brought up his half century in 17 balls against the Sydney Sixers, scooping 65 of 26 deliveries on Boxing Day in front of an insane crowd on the Gold Coast.
He hit two fours and eight sixs and played in a 125-year partnership with Glenn Maxwell (71 not eliminated) for the fifth wicket.
West Indians Jason Holder (1/26), who took Fletcher’s wicket, and Carlos Brathwaite (0/26) played neat spells for the Sixers.
The batsman from New South Wales brought the Sixers back into play with a 26-ball partnership with Holder (18) of 15 balls and a 47-run stand of 23 balls with Brathwaite (21). .
Hughes took 20 out of the final, was bowled by Maxwell in place of the injured Nathan Coulter-Nile and finished the match with a six, but was sacked for 96, with three still taking two balls.
The penultimate ball went for four byes and the Sixers were at home with a ball, causing the Melbourne Stars their first loss this season.
