Hodge was first a great amateur wrestler and was named the NCAA’s Greatest Wrestler twice – in 1956 and 57. He was a national champion with Oklahoma at 177 pounds from 1955 to 1957 and set a 46-0 record.

Hodge, who was also a gold glove champion, switched to professional wrestling after his amateur career and is in several Hall of Fames.
