According to Cyril Abiteboul, head of the Renault team, Formula 1 could become an energy battlefield in the future that will keep it state-of-the-art.
Since the discussions about the elaboration of new rules for hybrid engines will begin by 2026 at the latest, greater attention was paid to how the best F1 can remain attractive for fans and manufacturers.
The new regulations give F1 an opportunity to identify potential new technologies for engine development, fuels and batteries.
One of the most important directions F1 wants to take is to be at the forefront of sustainable fuel development, which it believes could bring tremendous environmental benefits, while keeping the majority of road vehicles running on internal combustion engines.
For Abiteboul, whose Renault bosses have completely dedicated themselves to Formula 1 after the team was renamed Alpine in 2021, the opportunities for the sport in the coming years are extremely exciting.
« I think there is a very interesting type of area that is going to open up for energy development, » Abiteboul explained.
« I think Formula 1 will become a sport around energy, what kind of fuel do we want, what kind of battery do we want to use.
« I see these things are going to be very important to the breakthrough of the industry and I think Formula 1 is a big part of leading the way in that regard. « .
« These things are clearly going to have an impact, not just in sport and not just in the automotive market, but frankly on a very large scale. «
F1 has already developed a second generation biofuel that has been sent to current manufacturers for testing to verify its suitability for future engines.
FIA President Jean Todt believes it is imperative that the Motorsport Board of Directors do everything in its power to ensure that Formula 1 remains sustainable in the face of growing environmental awareness.
« As a regulator and legislator in motorsport around the world and also as the largest road user organization around the world, it is imperative that we talk about sustainability, the environment and pollution. «
