Tottenham needs to bring in another Christian Eriksen, says Glenn Hoddle, and James Ward-Prowse is seen as inconsistent with the type of player Jose Mourinho normally goes for.
Eriksen decided after six and a half productive years in England against signing a new contract and took on a new challenge with the heavyweights of Serie A Inter.
This step did not go according to plan. A return to the Premier League is currently being discussed, but tracing back steps to Tottenham appears unlikely.
Hoddle believes, however, that Mourinho needs a player of this type since Spurs has no ball game option to complement the combative enforcers in their engine room.
He believes Southampton captain Ward-Prowse would tick useful boxes for a title-hunting outfit, but admits the Saints are unlikely to be asked questions with the window open.
Club legend Hoddle asked after the Evening Standard what Spurs need: “I would probably look at a player who can get passes. Someone like Bruno Fernandes.
« When Christian Eriksen was on Song for two and a half seasons, he could send these passes to Dele Alli or Harry Kane or anyone who did those runs.
« I’m not sure it’s Jose Mourinho’s style of play. They have some decent players there, but Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele are different, they run with the ball, they own the ball. But someone who can hurt you with a pass, a real creative gamer.
« I’ve said it before, I don’t think Jose would like him, but the Southampton boy James Ward-Prowse would be a huge asset. He and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg would be a good balance. ”
Ward-Prowse is a senior England international who has played four caps for his country. He is only 26 years old, despite having contested a ninth top campaign with the Saints.
He has also played alongside Hojbjerg in the past and another Denmark international made his way to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer of 2020.
A reunion could be an advantage for Mourinho, especially since Ward-Prowse has made a name for himself as a specialist in dead balls. However, it remains to be seen whether Spurs will do business before the next deadline.
