A badly injured police dog is recovering « well » after being stabbed to death by a man who later died in custody.

Queensland police officer Turbo was stabbed twice with scissors during the violent arrest in Toowoomba on Sunday evening.

The suspect was verbally abused during arrest and suffered a fatal medical episode while being rushed to hospital following on-site treatment.

He previously attacked Turbo’s handler, a 32-year-old police officer, with scissors when police responded to reports of a break and entered.

The attack caused cuts to the officer’s face and a small stab wound on the upper body.

The suspect then stabbed Turbo before his handler could deploy a taser and subdue him.

Turbo was taken to a local vet where he was in severe but stable condition with a shoulder wound and a lung puncture.

« We are pleased to announce that PD Turbo has not had an operation and is recovering well, » police said in a statement on Monday.
