Lifeguards rushed to rescue a teenager who was attacked by a small shark at a popular New South Wales beach
The 13-year-old was surfing at Town Beach in Port Macquarie on the mid-north coast when he was attacked at 6 a.m. on Monday
Paramedics rushed to the beach and treated the teenager for bites to his foot, fingers and upper leg

Lifeguard James Turnham told Port Macquarie News the attack happened in the middle of the beach and close to the shore
‘He made a mess of his ankle and there was a small bite on his finger It was not life threatening He was a little in shock’
‘He was in the center of the beach near the rocks where there is a little reef’
The species of the shark has not been confirmed but M Turnham said it may have been a small reef shark or a bull shark
« Surprisingly he was in a pretty good mood when our crew arrived and the local surf lifeguards did a great job looking after him when he first got out of the water » , she said

« I would say this young man will have some stories to tell his classmates when he is well enough to go back to school! »
The boy’s mother reportedly called other surfers for help when she saw her son had been assaulted
The beach has since been closed with signs warning potential swimmers and surfers not to go into the water
