BATHURST, Central West, NSW, Australia – Motorsport legends and everyday people around the world have paid tribute to 1983 Bathurst 1000 winner John Harvey, who died over the weekend at the age of 82.

« I just want to sit back and look at photos and remember the good times with John, » Australian motorsport icon Allan Moffat told Speedcafe. com.

« I’ve had so many good times with John and Beverly. It breaks my heart, « said Moffat on Sunday.

Another legend, Dick Johnson, said, « Slug (Harvey) has been the setback for HDT and Holden for so long. He should have won Bathurst more than once, but he put it on his chin. «

« I’ve had the pleasure of working and riding with John for a long time, » he told Speedcafe.

« John will be missed very much by everyone, his relaxed, uncomplicated style has been a hallmark. RIP John, a true gentleman. «

Harvey drove for Holden Dealer Teamcar, the second largest car on the team that won the race last year, and pulled out the 1983 Bathurst 1000 under unusual, unconventional and controversial circumstances.

After the first 8 laps, Teamcar’s best car, driven by Peter Brock and Perkins, was forced out of the race after the engine failed. Brock and Perkins then replaced Harvey and co-driver Phil Brock (Peter Brock’s brother) and took over car number two.

Brock and Perkins finished the race more than a lap ahead of them, and the three riders were crowned champions in what has been described as a historic first for the legendary Mt Panorama race. Many in the sport believed Brock and Perkins shouldn’t have taken over their team’s second car, but they were both registered and the rules allowed. Bad luck for Phil Brock, he hadn’t participated at the point at which the top duo took over. « Last night at 8:45 am our father, John Francis Harvey, unfortunately died peacefully with his family by his side, » wrote John Harvey’s family on Facebook. « Most people will have fond memories of Dad’s amazing racing career, and the great memories of him will live on forever. « To us he was much more, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who supported us all whenever we needed his guidance and love, » read the statement from the Harvey family.

« What a life he lived when he traveled the world with and against the best in the business, always a true gentleman. « We all know his proudest achievement was us. « . We will miss him very much, but we know the timing was right, « added the statement. Harvey drove eighteen times in the Bathurst 1000 and finished second three times. In 1976, 1984 and 1986 he managed the feat.

After retiring from the sport in 1988, he was inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2018 and received an Order of Australia (OAM) medal for services to motorsport in 2020.
