Ramsey is best known for his insightful and snappy weekly columns in the Sydney Morning Herald.
He served as a foreign correspondent for the Australian Associated Press in Port Moresby and London before accompanying Australian troops to Vietnam in 1965.
Ramsey joined the Canberra Press Gallery the following year, shouting « you liars » to Prime Minister John Gorton during a parliamentary debate in 1971.
He was associate editor of The Australian for several years before joining the Sydney Morning Herald, where he spent his last 22 years in journalism before retiring in 2008.
« Vale Alan Ramsey. Uncompromising, impressive, informed, informative. Always a match for the politicians – and they knew it, « said Canberra political correspondent Michelle Grattan.
Mike Carlton wrote: « Irascible, fearless, relentless, in his prime in the gallery there was no better one. «
« His weekly columns were a must when I was younger. A big part of my political education, « he said.
