Yokohama F. . Marinos activate the style to seal the AFC Champions League round of 16.

Doha: Yokohama F. . Marinos sealed his first qualification for the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League, eliminating Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors of Korea Republic with a 4-1 win at Al Janoub Stadium on Tuesday.

A lightning strike from Thai full-back Theerathon Bunmathan gave Yokohama the lead before Marcos Junior scored and an own goal by Song Bum-keun made for an impressive second-half performance from Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Gustavo scored from the penalty spot for Jeonbuk, who will miss the business end of the tournament for the second time in 12 appearances in Asia’s premier club competition, while Yokohama has a chance to win the group if they meet Sydney FC on Friday.

More than nine months after dismantling the K-League champions in Jeonju and only needed one point to move forward, Yokohama set out to get Jeonbuk under control during a hectic opening period.

Marcos Junior and Erik both tried to shoot over the bar and there were some other nervous early moments for José Morais’ side as Yokohama regularly found joy on both flanks.

It was a broad player, Theerathon, who scored the first goal and caught Jeonbuk off guard after a quick free kick before dribbling to the edge of the 18-yard box with Song Bum and pounding the ball into the net – keun rooted the point when the ball flew into the near post.

Responsibility now rested with Jeonbuk, who needed a win to keep his slim knockout rounds of 16 hopes going, but it was the Japanese side that kept the initiative, with Modou Barrow’s shot on goal towards the end of the first half being one of the few efforts one player wearing green in the first half.

Yokohama confirmed his control six minutes after the break with a terrific second goal. Marcos Junior had the finishing touches, calmly beating Song from 10 yards after being taken care of by Teruhito Nakagawa’s no-look pass, but Jeonbuk found his own answer just two minutes later when Gustavo converted a penalty.

The Brazilian scored his second goal of the tournament after Thiago Martins took Barrow’s cross. Yokohama goalkeeper Obi failed to repeat his penalty shoot-outs against the Shanghai SIPG Oscar six days earlier.

But Yokohama quickly restored their two-goal buffer, and if there was an award for supporting the tournament it would surely go to Erik for his beach soccer-inspired overhead kick against Nakagawa who valiantly took the ball home drove to make him 3-1 in the 72nd. minute.

Postecoglou’s indictment let the result in the 82. Minute when Onaiwu – who had been introduced as a substitute only seven minutes earlier – volleyed in the direction of the goal and Song forgot to go on the day when he accidentally headed the ball into his own net.

Yokohama will end their group stage against Sydney FC on Friday, while Jeonbuk will be proud of it when they face Shanghai SIPG.
