DANZAL Baker, known on stage as the Baker Boy, has been awarded a Medal from the Order of Australia for his services to the performing arts as a musician and singer.
However, he won’t be celebrating the honor today, turning down the media opportunity and releasing a statement saying he would instead mourn the invasion day connotations surrounding Australia Day.
« I am grateful for this recognition and look forward to sharing and celebrating it, but I do not want to make any further comments at this point as I mourn Invasion Day, » the statement said.
« I look forward to a time when we will celebrate our country, our people and their successes on another day out of respect for all the brothers and sisters of my First Nations. »
Baker’s 2020 achievements included winning the second Artist of the Year award at the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMA) and winning Song of the Year and Film Clip of the Year for his song Meditjin.
After winning NIMA’s Top Gong Artist of the Year for the second year running, Baker said it was just as shocking the second time.
« There were so many incredible nominees that I didn’t expect to win anything at the NIMAs this year.
Baker first hit the entertainment scene in 2017 when he won the Triple J Unearthed National Indigenous Music Awards competition after releasing singles and music videos Cloud 9 and Marryuna.
As a former member of the Djuki Mala dance group, Baker has also won awards at the National Dreamtime Awards and received nominations for the ARIA Awards and APRA Awards.
