Spoilers ahead for life ???? s « Beware of the midwife » ???? « Beware of the midwife » ???? reminds you at the beginning of Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf’s « Pieces of a Woman ». With many parallels to the Netflix drama, the lifetime thriller controls the conflict between mother-to-be, Sarah (Mouna Traoré), her husband and doctors about the way she wants to give birth to her daughter. The story deviates after introducing her antagonist who is stealing the limelight on it. Sarah and her husband Kevin (Michael Xavier) conceived their first child after many attempts, and Sarah firmly believes that it would be safer to have their baby at home. After a lot of back and forth over the decision to hire a midwife, the couple concludes with Rose (Raven Dauda). « Beware of the Midwife » gives us a glimpse into Rose’s character much earlier than Sarah and Kevin when he begins a scene where she steals a baby from the hospital nursery. A few years later, she is the midwife Sarah and Kevin appointed to help with the birth of their daughter. When we see Rose wearing longer hair with a successful career in midwife and nursing, it shows that she is still looking for a newborn. The offer from Sarah and Kevin would be the perfect opportunity for a desperate Rose who does everything in her power to take away her baby daughter, Mary. The story catches your attention by focusing on Rose’s relationship with her infertile daughter who couldn’t give her a grandchild. As the abusive mother, a loose and obsessed grandmother’s criminal with dangerous and undesirable traits, Rose is portrayed as the epitome of the antagonist.
The plot is well done, but the execution could have been better. Rose undoubtedly defined the entire movie, but the notion that a woman in her fifties could conveniently abduct babies without being caught, not just once, is exaggerated and could have done without. A number of emotions are included, but they could have been portrayed better.
While Dauda’s acting stands out, Traore similarly does her character justice. Their characteristics are well defined to suit the roles and director Max McGuire’s idea of bringing them together is laudable. However, the story makes up for the lack of action by showing a mother’s determination to find her baby daughter, which is worth watching to the end. The climax also surprises you with a few twists and turns and the ending, we leave it up to you to guess. « Beware of the Midwife » premieres on April 11th at 8pm ET for life.
