The news is slowly being filtered out of a significant breach of personal data affecting both the various Star Alliance and Oneworld airlines, in particular data relating to members of their airlines’ frequent flyer programs.

It appears that certain Star Alliance and Oneworld member airlines are using SITA, a cloud computing company that stores personal data for easy verification of frequent flyer status between Oneworld / Star Alliance members. In short, SITA’s databases have been compromised, which resulted in certain airline loyalty program members in Oneworld and Star Alliance members disclosing the following information:

The data breach did not result in the disclosure of passwords, credit card information or anything else Keeping customer data such as email addresses.

While this data breach may be more common, it is much less severe than the recent British Airways problem that even resulted in some credit card information being leaked.

Verify Please keep your emails as the various Oneworld and Star Alliance member airlines have started emailing members of the loyalty program in accordance with their legal requirements. If you receive an email in which your data has been compromised, you should take the necessary steps to protect your information.

At a time when personal data breaches are becoming increasingly serious and the airlines Still having a hard time, this is clearly bad news for a number of airlines looking to restore customer confidence. However, it is comforting to see that a number of such airlines are dealing quickly, openly and honestly with the matter.

We are not yet sure whether other airline loyalty alliances like Skyteam are affected. We will update this post as more information becomes available.

Ok, that worried me a bit after I got trapped in OLD British Airways not long ago. I got a couple of emails from Star Alliance (Singapore) and Oneworld (Cathay) and everything seems to be fine here
