Defenders Brian Dumoulin and Juuso Riikola and striker Evan Rodrigues were again in full training on Friday Pittsburgh Penguins. While coach Mike Sullivan was on the verge of explaining if anyone will be returning to the game on Saturday, it’s an encouraging sign considering that Dumoulin was prominently among the pairings during the line rushes.

Dumoulin ( Lower body injury) skated with longtime partner Kris Letang on what has long been the penguins’ top defensive pairing. In combination with the assignment of P.O. Joseph to Wilkes-Barre / Scranton a day after injuring another defender (Mark Friedman), it is no logical leap to assume that Dumoulin could play the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon.

« It’s a real boost for us, to get him back, « said defense attorney Marcus Pettersson. « It’s been a while. »

« We probably have nine or ten NHL defenders, » said #Penguins coach Mike Sullivan Wednesday after training with Mark Friedman and Brian Dumoulin in Cranberry Township. https://t.co/iklfRiSjDi

Dumoulin has been playing since January 26th. It had been exactly a week since Riikola (upper body) played, and Rodrigues (lower body) had been on the line-up since January 24th.

Riikola skated on a fourth pairing with Chad Ruhwedel, and Rodrigues was part of one Wing rotation in the fourth row. For anyone, this is probably where they are when they are healthy.

« (Dumoulin, Riikola and Rodrigues) skated with full contact and capacity today so they are making progress there, » said Trainer Mike Sullivan after Friday’s practice session at the PPG Paints Arena. « We’ll see how they react and visit our medical staff and make appropriate (line-up) decisions. »

One day after leaving a game after Friedman scored a goal against the Flyers at the start of the second half , he wasn’t in training on Friday. Sullivan had no specific update other than that he was « still being evaluated ».
