Berlin: RB Leipzig prepared for the Champions League duel against Liverpool with a 2-1 home win against Augsburg on Friday. Defender Dayot Upamecano will move to Bayern Munich in the coming season.

According to Kicker magazine and Bild newspaper, Bayern are paying 43 million euros to avoid the buy-out clause in Upamecano’s contract, an unused replacement against Augsburg , to activate.

The Leipzig sports director Markus Kroesche insisted that Upamecano was rested before the first leg against Liverpool on Tuesday, which was moved from Great Britain to Budapest due to the German travel restrictions for COVID-19.

« Me I just focused on the game. I know the player has a buy-out clause, but I had to worry about a Bundesliga game, « said Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann, who refused to confirm the Upamecano reports.

Augsburg withdrew a goal when midfielder Daniel Caligiuri converted a penalty 13 minutes from time.

« We did well, but it was too tense in the end. The goal I conceded annoyed me a little, « added Nagelsmann when Leipzig scored a third win in a row.

The round of 16 of the Champions League in Liverpool against RB Leipzig will now be played in the Puskas Arena in Budapest. The change of location took place because the restrictions of the coronavirus prevented Liverpool from traveling to Germany.

With the win, Bayern are 10 points ahead of second-placed RB Leipzig, who has a game against the crisis-ridden Schalke in hand.

If the travel restrictions are extended beyond February 17, Manchester City’s first leg trip against Borussia Mönchengladbach on February 24 could be affected.
