On a bright November morning in Australia, Andrea Seccafien takes a call from a reporter in Toronto before two late spring runs with temperatures as high as 33 ° C. « Never a day off, » said Canada’s record holder in the women’s half marathon. « To run more than 5 km to the half marathon, I have to run a lot. « Seccafien doesn’t mind the scorching heat now that she’s finally training for a race – a half marathon in December. 13 in the Australian island state of Tasmania – after two coronavirus pandemics kept them away from competition from March to October. Seccafien’s mental health suffered greatly during these months. She shared a small apartment with fiancé Jamie Whitfield, was overwhelmed by « a spiral of thoughts, many worries, » and took a break from training in June before the second 111-day suspension began. Seccafien often wondered whether the newly planned Tokyo Olympics would actually take place next summer. Would she get the chance to apply for the 10th. 000 meters to qualify for the Summer Games? What would a long layoff mean for your career? Everything felt so much more difficult because my heart rate was always 20 beats above a normal amount. – Canadian runner Andrea Seccafien training against mental health « I didn’t know what was going on [with me]. « . I was definitely dealing with a lot of anxiety, but luckily we have a really good support group at Athletics Canada, « said Seccafien, who also went to see a sports psychologist in Australia, where she has lived since late 2017, after Jamie did a postdoctoral job on the Melbourne campus from the Australian Catholic University. « I didn’t sleep well either, so there was just a lot going on. « During the lockdown, Melbourne’s five million residents were able to leave their homes to do sports and buy groceries outside, but they couldn’t drive more than three miles. Fortunately, there was a 31 km run for seccafies on a nearby network of trails. Nonetheless, Ont comes from Guelph. faced many challenges. « Everything felt so much more difficult because my heart rate was always 20 beats above normal, » the 30-year-old recalled, her voice breaking with emotions. « My body was full the whole time. ‘Nerve-wracking’ with no treatment « I would try to do a workout, but running a time that would normally be very easy would feel like doing a threshold or pace faster and harder than a normal easy run. « During harder training sessions on the road, Jamie rode next to Seccafien and accompanied her on all long runs. « That was very helpful. It was really hard [emotionally] but we are a good team, « said the Melbourne Track Club member, who found it » nerve-wracking « to run 150 km a week and not get physiotherapy and massage therapy. Looking back, Seccafien realizes that it was necessary to step back after struggling through the workout and not seeing any improvement in her fitness. « When we went into lockdown again in July, I had time to train alone and at my own pace and not compare myself to others. This was beneficial in getting fit and confident again, « said Seccafien, who also focused on meditation and her daily training responsibilities to overcome fear. « I think if I had to train again [with my group] it would have spiraled again. I feel normal now. « Seccafien is also in good physical health after tearing her right plantar – the ligament that connects the heel bone to your toes – in September 2018. After attempts to run through the pain resulted in a stress response (deep bone contusion) preventing them from reaching the 10th grade. 000, Seccafien injured the Plantar again while she was at the Canadian Championships in Montreal on April 25. July 2019 at the 5. 000 took second place. She recovered to set two personal bests on three days in October in Doha, Qatar – Jan.. 4 o’clock. 67 in the semi-finals to shave almost four seconds before her PB and hit the 15:10 Olympic standard. Then she drove her very first sub-15-minute-5. 000 and finished 13th in her first world final. space. CLOCK | Andrea Seccafien runs under 5 for the first time. 000 minutes to 5. 000 m: « They always want to finish higher so that the goal in Tokyo is in the top eight or ten, » said Seccafien, who turned 20 on her Olympic debut in Rio in 2016. « I was so green in Rio. I made movements and wasted energy. Now I feel like I’ve learned how to drive these [championship] races. « In Tasmania, the former University of Toronto Track Club runner will race for the first time since setting a 33:05 PB in the 10k race in February. 23, three weeks after beating Natasha Wodak’s Canadian half marathon record in 1:09:38 at the Kagawa Marugame International Half Marathon in Japan. « I’ve had a constant training block since August and I think I’m pretty fit. So there is no reason why it shouldn’t go well, « said Seccafien, who still hopes to win the 5th. 000 and 10. 000 in Tokyo. « I don’t know if it will be a record race for Canada, but I hope it will be around this time. « . «
