Iveson made the announcement in a statement Monday morning, saying he had only ever hoped to serve two terms as mayor. He said the decision was made after “much deliberation. ”

Iveson said there is considerable work to be done with the remainder of the council’s term of office, including:

« I will always be grateful to my wife Sarah for her encouragement, my parents and in-laws for their support, and my children for their understanding, as they had to share their father with a very demanding public role. In addition to Sarah’s generous leadership and community engagement, our work has always been about creating a better city for the next generation so that more of our children and grandchildren can stay here and be proud of their hometown.
“There will be plenty of time to reflect in the coming year, but I would like to take this moment to say that it has been the honor and privilege of my life to serve the people of this wonderful and resilient city. Now let’s get back to work. ”
Iveson first ran for city council in 2007 when he was elected District 10. He served six years (two terms) on the council before being elected mayor in 2013 and taking over from former mayor Stephen Mandel.
