A family of five is supported by the Canadian Red Cross and Salvation Army after a fire on Friday morning left their apartment in the east uninhabitable.
Paramedics examined the family and took the mother to the hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation after firefighters reunited her with her three children, who were separated during the evacuation.
Ottawa Fire Services became 240 Brittany Dr. . near St. . Laurent Boulevard at 7:06 am. m. by calling the building’s alarm company. Subsequent emergency calls confirmed that a fire was burning.
When the firefighters arrived four minutes later, they found heavy black smoke and flames from a unit on the fourth floor.
There was heavy smoke in the hallway as they went up the stairs and started fighting the flames and searching the unit for occupants.
The apartment, where firefighters continued to open parts of the wall and ceiling to make sure the fire was extinguished, was damaged, the Ottawa Fire Department said in a press release.
Firefighters vented smoke from the hallways, making sure that residents seeking shelter on OC Transpo buses could return to their homes safely.
