The 1. December was a dark day for fans of the General Hospital heroine Lulu and her actor Emme Rylan: After getting caught in an explosion, Laura’s daughter was so badly injured that she fell into a coma and was taken to a long-term care facility. But if you blink, you may just see a silver lining in this result.
ABC’s only daily drama didn’t kill Lulu. Not that the death in Port Charles really means much, as half the city was believed to be doomed at one time or another. But it will be a lot easier for the show to bring Lulu back one day if she still had a pulse when she left.
Plus, not for nothing, but miraculous recoveries run in the reporter’s family. You will remember Laura falling into a catatonic state after remembering that she murdered her stepfather’s mistress. And look at Laura now!
Her mother Lesley also spent years with it while she was being held by Nikolas’ uncle Stefan. Today? She’s right like rain.
So yeah, it’s a bummer – even a bummer and three quarters – that Rylan and Lulu will be off screen for the foreseeable future. However, we can’t help but remain optimistic that their outcomes will only be temporary. Hell, Laura’s speech to her daughter almost confirmed it.
« Don’t sleep too long, » she whispered to Lulu. “You’ve been through so many things in your life … and you’ve always managed to fight your way back. So please, please, Lulu, fight your way back to me . . . ‘Cause when you go you take my heart with you. ”
Laura continued in the voice-over. « I’ll be happy when you come to see me again, » she said. « I was happy about the day you were born, and since then I have been happy every day. And you will come back. I am your mother; I know better than anyone and I know that you will never give up until you get home. ”
If we are very lucky, she will do so sooner rather than later and exactly when the time is absolutely uncomfortable for everyone involved. For example, when Dante has pretended to be Brook Lynn’s baby daddy so that she doesn’t have to tell the city pariah Valentin to stock up on Pampers. For example, when Dante played a little too much with Brook Lynn House. For example, when they started to have a nice, mixed family with Rocco.
