Norwegian scores another big win; A big day for Brits Goodwin and Davis but Ali Brownlee DNFs

He was the surprise winner of the 2019 Ironman World Championship in Nice, but now Norwegian Gustav Iden has really established himself as a major force in triathlon by winning the PTO 2020 championship at Challenge Daytona in Florida.

The Norwegian 24-year-old took control of the 20km running track when better-known names suffered, including Alistair Brownlee, who was eliminated with a calf problem and ran to victory with a gap of more than a minute from the pursuer. That group included rugby, 24-year-old George Goodwin, the rising star of middle-distance racing in the UK after beating Tim Don at Outlaw X in September that would finish third behind Matt Hanson.

At the PTO 2020 championship at Challenge Daytona, the best men’s elite tri field of the year was easy to see, even though it was a massively disrupted season, but there were several ITU world champions, an Ironman world champion, Olympic champion and Medal winners and Commonwealth Games All winners line up to compete for the 100th. Fight $ 000 profit check.

When swimming in a wetsuit, South Africa’s reigning Commonwealth Games Champion, Henri Schoeman, was the first to leave Lake Lloyd after 22:25 minutes, with an impressive foursome of Ali Brownlee, Vincent Luis, Jonny Brownlee and Javier Gomez in close pursuit was.

Ali Brownlee flew from T1 on board his new Scott Plasma and would largely control the pace for the 4 x 20 km long laps with the German Floren Angert. In contrast to the women’s race, the 20-meter design rules were tested (okay, broken) for much of the first 20 km, and Vincent Luis and Jonny Brownlee were just two athletes who fell victim to the draftbusters and received a 2-minute penalty.

After 40km, Ali Brownlee was sure to dictate the pace (rumors of a flat tire turned out to be unfounded), but behind him a tactical game played out with athletes swapping places and trying to avoid penalties. Two surprising victims of the pace were 2014 Ironman world champion, Kienle, and five-time ITU champion, Javier Gomez, who both fell off the books, and Jonny Brownlee, who fell more than two minutes from the leaders.

The last 20km did little to excite online viewers, but American Rudy Von Berg would get into T2 10 seconds ahead of Aussie Sam Appleton and 18 seconds ahead of Ali Brownlee in the lead. Up-and-coming 25-year-old Briton Tom Davis was 25 seconds behind after finishing second ahead of Tim Don in Outlaw X in September.

If there is a lot of movement on the run, Brit @ tomdavis1995 comes first and @sam_appo right behind him. Unfortunately, the racing favorite @AliBrownleetri suffers from calf cramps and is on 19th place in the ranking. Place #challengedaytona

On the run and Ali Brownlee took the lead in the race despite a shaky T2 and soon he was out after a reported calf problem. And so it was left to Brits Tom Davis and George Goodwin to draw most of the UK’s attention as they made their way through the field.

Goodwin, the Outlaw X 2020 winner, to be featured in the next edition of 220 (released 24. December), finished second in the third round in search of Iden, but had American Matt Hansen close behind him.

CONGRATULATIONS to the young Norwegian Gustav Iden, the ruling world 70. 3 Champion wins the PTO 2020 World Championship here at @challengedaytona. I was « in the zone, in the end I had pretty good control » and won Iden’s focus! #challengedaytona

The pace was rapid and the battle for the podium was intense, but Iden’s victory seemed assured in the third of four rounds and the Norwegian would finish the title in 3:05:06.

With a fantastic race, the 24-year-old Brit @teamGoodwinTri finished third who drove a smart race: « I knew I had a top ten in me . . . I gradually got my way. « . Well done George! #challengedaytona

Hansen finished second before Goodwin finished third and a payday of 50. 000 US dollars before Canadians Lionel Sanders and Von Berg rounded out the top 5.
