World News – CA – Has Supernatural just confirmed that « Destiel » is real?

Sort of - but this big moment between Dean and Castiel may not be quite the triumph fans have wanted since season four.

As if this week hadn’t been intense enough already, the folks in the Supernatural Writers’ Room have done their part to send the internet even further into chaos – apparently making the canon immensely popular. of their « Destiel » show While the timing certainly grabbed viewers’ attention (« Destiel » rose to the top trending topics on Twitter last night after the episode aired), the question of whether it is. the big victory expected by the fans is another discussion

A quick recap for the uninitiated: Supernatural is a supernatural horror / drama show on The CW where step brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) drive across the country in their hot Impala and hunting down all manner of demonic creatures over the course of the series’ 15 years, which will end later this month, a number of fan-favorite characters have come and gone, but none have cemented themselves so clearly as fan favorite like Castiel of Misha Collins, an angel of the Lord with a trench coat and a gritty, unmoved voice

Since its introduction in Season Four’s first game « Lazarus Rising, » fans of the show have vocally sent Castiel along with his older brother Dean – and the show’s cast and crew have long recognized and played with that fact Perhaps more than any other show, Supernatural is renowned for referencing, making fun of, and some may even say bending over to its sizable fan base. In the past, they’ve done episodes where the characters meet. life-obsessed conspiracy theorists, teenage girls staging a musical about them and all other kinds of audience replacements

Last night’s episode « Despair » takes the cake, however, by (apparently) finally making a long-awaited love affair between Castiel and Dean The short version is that Castiel has made a deal with an entity to prevent Dean from getting killed if he commits suicide Last season, Castiel made a deal with this same entity that he could only die after experiencing true happiness – which in turn would imply that Castiel’s moment of true happiness was finally admitting to Dean that ‘he is in love with him After these three little words, Castiel is taken by the entity

Credit where credit is due – it’s an emotional scene Misha Collins gives a particularly engaged performance, and seeing Cas with real tears in his eyes as he confesses his love is as shocking as it is heartbreaking But the moment also can’t help but feel a little insincere, for a number of reasons. Firstly, it sounds like a classic case of the ‘bury your gays’ trope, where a show or movie, after you eventually allowed their queer characters to be happy or to confess their love, turns around and chills them immediately Granted, it’s supernatural, and both men are « dead » and come back before, so it remains to be seen if the sticks death of Cas

Even if we put aside the problem « bury your gays », there remains the question of the relative partiality of love As Castiel empties himself with all his heart, Dean stands right there, in shock – and most importantly, he doesn’t say “I love you” back For fans who have been hoping for Destiel since its inception, it almost feels like the show is cheating on them or trying to avoid having to have a real relationship queer canon onscreen If the scene is really all there is to it, and Castiel has just been crying one way for Dean the entire time, it turns what could have been a triumphant moment into a dull moment, even cliché

Still, there are two episodes left in Supernatural’s final season, and with all the antics the show has pulled off in its 15-year history, there’s always the possibility that it could go for the Hail Mary. and finally deliver some of the real Destiel payoff that fans have been hoping for on November 19
