After the first US presidential debate that prompted organizers to introduce a mute button, NBC reporter Kristen Welker took over the reins in what many viewers feared would be another chaotic night of screaming and crossover conversations
Instead, the debate stayed largely on track as Welker kept candidates in the loop, earning the veteran White House reporter a rare moment of bipartisan praise

Welker has been a White House reporter for NBC since 2011 and played a leading role in network coverage during the 2016 presidential election. In January, she was promoted to co-host of â ???? Weekend Today, â ???? NBC Weekend Morning Show
In September Welker received the award for « outstanding journalism in television broadcasting » at the Washington Women in Journalism Awards
US President Donald Trump previously congratulated Welker on his new job with â € “ Weekend Todayâ ???? in January, saying that NBC had made a « very wise decision » in her hiring, but has since changed her tone, tweeting Saturday that she has always been terrible unfair &, as have most of the Fake News reportersâ € ”
At rally in Arizona on Monday, Trump called her a ‘radical Democrat’ who has been screaming questions at me for a long timeâ ????
Welker was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa to a white father and a black mother His mother was the first African American president of the Penn State University Women’s Student Association
“Growing up as a biracial child, the idea of helping people of different races and backgrounds communicate better inspired me to become a journalist,” she said in a profile on Black Journalists in Glamor magazine in June
Welker was among four debate moderators for a US Democratic Debate in November 2019, where she was tasked with questioning the remaining 10 candidates on health care, race and housing
This time around, Welker has selected six topics: the fight against COVID-19, American families, race in America, climate change, national security and leadership
