VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Five businesses are in total loss as massive fire continues to burn in Vancouver’s Cambie village

Fire crews are now trying to stop the blaze, which burns on the east side of Cambie Street between 24th Avenue and King Edward, from spreading

The fire is believed to have started at the back of a cafe on the block around 3 a.m., but there is no word yet on what started it

The fire has closed several blocks in Cambie, impacting businesses already hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic

The fire started around 3 a.m. Thursday, and firefighters are expected to be there all morning

“I woke up to the same news as my merchants and owners,” says Rania Hatz, executive director of the Cambie Village Business Association « It’s an older building, some of these buildings, so there is a lot of concern »

Hatz notes that it is already a difficult time for businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with many having already closed their doors

“[The businesses] are barely trying to survive,” she said. “We got help with the City of Vancouver to create a patio space in front of two of the businesses that will be affected… Even with that , companies barely hang on We have a board member on this block and as a trade association we rely on different companies with space to store certain products for us or store things for us »

There is a cat boarding house on the block that was hit by the flames, but Hatz tells NEWS 1130 that the fire department was able to get the animals out safely

Hatz says business owners are rushing to see if they’ve been affected, but admits it’s difficult to get to the area right now

John Timms of Vancouver Police Traffic Authority says flames were shooting 10 feet into the air at one point

« It’s probably at least three alarm fires right now This will definitely go into rush hour, » he told NEWS 11:30 am earlier in the morning
