« It has been the honor and privilege of my life to serve the people of this wonderful and resilient city, » said Iveson in a statement posted on his website.
Iveson joined the city council in 2007 and was first elected mayor in 2013. He won a second term in 2017.
In his statement, titled « Dear Edmontonians, » Iveson said he had only ever intended to serve two terms.
He promised to keep working to fight systemic racism, homelessness and urban jobs.
« With one year left, I want to make it clear that my unique daily focus is relentlessly on protecting and helping the Edmonton people of Edmonton affected by COVID-19 and the economic challenges we are facing, » said Iveson.
