Judd Trump leads world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan 5-3 at Milton Keynes at the end of a tense afternoon session in the final of the Northern Ireland Open.
Trump played good snooker in the much anticipated clash between two greats in the sport.
The session started with poor security from O’Sullivan, which gave Trump the opportunity to poke the yellow pocket in a long blue. The reigning champion then pocketed the pink to secure a cage first frame.
In a bizarre second frame, O’Sullivan decided to give Trump a second try to spin the cue ball around the black to throw a red over the bag, with the two-time defending champion signed before the missile defied all continued to play i need six snookers.
Since the session seemed to slip, O’Sullivan produced a sensational coincidence in the third that finally put the 44-year-old on the scoreboard. He missed a green in the lower left by a mile but watched it come off four pillows and then fall into the center left before adding the brown and a difficult cut on a blue.
Trump took a 3-1 lead with a 69 break before returning after the break to pocket a crucial pink and deepen O’Sullivan’s troubles in fifth.
O’Sullivan desperately needed the sixth and dug deep into the depths as he pocketed a bright red to keep it within reach, but Trump restored his three-frame advantage with a clinical break of 128.
The Rocket cut the backlog by 137 to two – its sixth century of the tournament and a much-needed break in the Sunday night session.
