The No.. Thanks to a 27:21 win against No.. 6 Iowa State on Saturday in Arlington, Texas. It was a formidable performance from the Sooners, who took the 24/7 lead at halftime and held on for their lives, as the resilient Cyclones made a valiant comeback attempt in the second half.
A few months ago, the Sooners staggered. They lost their first two Big 12 games, including a loss to Iowa State. It was the first time since 1999 that OU had lost two consecutive regular season games. Suddenly the Big 12 seemed to be winning.
But in the end, the conference still belonged to Oklahoma. The Sooners took six straight wins to end the regular season and extended that streak to seven by knocking out a team from the State of Iowa in the middle of a historic season.
Iowa State had not won a conference title since 1912. Yes, 1912. But even after a 24-7 deficit at halftime, the Cyclones had a chance in the last minutes of the game. 27:21, 2:01 back, Iowa State drove into the Oklahoma area with a chance of winning. But in third and eleventh place in OU 34, just over a minute from the end, ISU quarterback Brock Purdy threw an interception that spelled the end of the Cyclones comeback.
Oklahoma set the tone early on, marching straight across the field and gaining a 7-0 lead on his first run. And after a game in which a near-interception by Spencer Rattler ricocheted off two ISU defenders, Rattler linked up with Marvin Mims at 45 yards in the first game of the second quarter and scored the 14-0.
All along, the Oklahoma Defense was teeming with ISU’s announced duo Purdy and running back to Breece Hall. Hall leads the nation in a rush but was largely bottled on Saturday. He finished the game with just 79 yards in 23 runs, while Purdy threw 322 yards, one touchdown and three costly interceptions.
Purdy’s first interception came in the end zone when the ISU fell 17-0 at the end of the first half. His second interception took place at the beginning of the second half – again on the territory of Oklahoma, but this time with a 24-7 deficit of his team. His third ended the Big 12 title dreams for the Cyclones.
The Iowa State defense got OU stuck in the second half while the offensive tried to take the lead. The Oklahoma defense was very bad in the Lincoln Riley era, but this group was different. The Sooners were particularly relentless in the trenches on Saturday.
Purdy was under constant pressure, while Hall had very little room to operate between the tackles. Nevertheless, the cyclones kept breaking off. In the fourth quarter, Purdy made several large forcible throws and Hall finished a 12-game 87-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to reduce Oklahoma’s lead to 24-21, 5:15.
All momentum was on the Iowa state side and the cyclones had to force another punt. The previous five Oklahoma possessions ended in beatings. But when it came down to it, Rattler, with the help of Rhamondre Stevenson and his group of receivers, led his team straight onto the pitch to score an important field goal, making it 2:01 to 27-21.
The cyclones invaded the Oklahoma area and tensions were high. In a game of third relegation, Purdy scored a big hit and the ball bounced in the air as he tried to throw down the field. The pass was intercepted by Tre Brown within the 10-yard line at 1:05.
With the Big 12 title in the books, Oklahoma improved to 8-2 and earned a spot in a New Year’s Six Bowl game. That bowl game will likely be the Cotton Bowl, which means the Sooners will be returning to the AT&T Stadium for their postseason game. That ends OU’s three-year CFP streak, but it’s still nice consolation for a team that started Year 1-2.
The key image of Iowa State is a little trickier. The cyclones (8-3) were No.. 6 in the College Football Playoff leaderboard on Saturday. There is a chance – when they join a team like No.. 7 Florida, No.. Will play. 1 Alabama in the SEC title game on Saturday night – that the Cyclones have a big place in a New Year’s Six Bowl game. The Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl are options.
But if the Cyclones tumble in the leaderboard, the next Big 12 Bowl game would be the Alamo Bowl.
The Toronto Raptors have waived Canadian security guard / striker Oshae Brissett, striker / center Henry Ellenson and striker Alize Johnson.
Jerry Rice believes the statistics don’t lie and that he’s the best receiver in NFL history.
Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry hopes his squad can grow into one of the best defensive teams in the league, adding new faces to a complicated system.
MILAN – Cristiano Ronaldo responded to recent criticism with two goals to help Juventus in Saturday’s 4-0 Serie A win at Parma. Dejan Kulusevski scored Juve’s opener against his old club as the nine-time defending champions tied with Inter Milan, one point behind leaders AC Milan. Both Milanese will play on Sunday when the Rossoneri travel to Sassuolo and Inter host Spezia. Juventus have drawn half of their 12 Serie A games. The 20-year-old midfielder was on loan from Parma last season. During this time he moved permanently from Atalanta to Juventus. Kulusevski was the quickest to react to a low cross from Alex Sandro from the left and tossed it in the 23. Minute in the bottom corner. Juventus doubled their lead just three minutes later when Álvaro Morata floated in a cross from the right and Ronaldo jumped up to take the lead. Ronaldo had his second three minutes in the second half with an angled drive past Luigi Sepe after being picked by Aaron Ramsey. Morata added the fourth when he headed in Federico Bernardeschi’s flank. MORE MISERYBottom Club Crotone’s recent positive results were halted with a 3-1 loss in Sampdoria. Crotone picked up four of their six points from their last two games, but goals from Mikkel Damsgaard and Jakub Jankto gave Sampdoria a 2-0 start. Simy pulled back a goal for Crotone from the penalty spot at halftime, but substitute Fabio Quagliarella restored Samp’s lead to two goals in the second half five minutes after the rebound from the bench. CLEVELAND – Raven’s cornerback Marcus Peters can deny anything he wants, but the NFL thought he spat on Brown’s broad receiver Jarvis Landry. The league punished Peters with a fine of 12 on Saturday. $ 500 for his promotions, which was followed by a verbal back-and-forth battle between players this week. Peters was punished for unsportsmanlike conduct despite not receiving punishment in Baltimore’s 47:42 win over Cleveland. On television, Peters was spat in Landry’s direction at the end of the first quarter. Landry had turned his back and didn’t know what Peters had done until after the game. Landry responded by calling Peters « a coward ». « I think he knew he might do things like that behind my back, but he wouldn’t do that for my face, » Landry said. « So I take it for what it’s worth and now I know. Everyone knows what type of player they are, what type of person they are. Peters said in a statement released by the Ravens that he did not spat on Landry. « Where do I come from when you have a problem with someone, deal face-to-face, man-to-man, » Peters said. « Anyone who thinks I’m deliberately spitting on them doesn’t know me – plain and simple. After the game, Peters was filmed by a teammate on the team’s flight, Landry and Brown’s receiver Odell Beckham Jr. . “Girls at home. Raven coach John Harbaugh defended Landry on Friday. « There was no way Marcus would do that, » said Harbaugh. “I know Marcus very well. That’s not his style anyway. If he was upset, he wouldn’t. What he did was he spat in that direction. It wasn’t in anyone’s direction per se, and you could tell from the clip. Brown’s coach Kevin Stefanski declined to comment on the situation. The past few seasons have seen bad blood between the Browns and Ravens, who were the Browns before moving to Baltimore in 1996. Last year Ravens defender Marlon Humphrey put his hands around Beckham’s throat and appeared to be choking after the two wrestled after a game. ___More AP NFL: https: // apnews. com / NFL and https: // twitter. com / AP_NFLTom Withers, The Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Saints placed recipient Michael Thomas in injured reserve on Saturday. This enables the Saints to give a healthy player the active squad spot for the final three regular season games while they rest their star recipient the playoffs. Thomas, the AP Offensive Player of the Year 2019, has had an ankle injury since week 1 of the season and was already excluded from Sunday’s game against defending champions Kansas City Chiefs on Friday. It is the seventh time this season that Thomas has been removed from the line-up. According to the current NFL rules, which were enacted in response to the coronavirus pandemic, players can return from the injured reserve after just three games. The Saints also put All-Pro returnees Deonte Harris on injured reserve in 2019. Harris had been inactive for the last three games due to a neck injury. Thomas will end the 2020 regular season after receiving 40 passes for 438 yards and no touchdowns in seven games. That comes a season after his NFL record of 149 catches for 1. 725 yards and nine TDs. The roster change with Thomas came when the Saints Drew Brees officially activated from his last stay in the injured reserve due to a broken rib and a lung injury. Coach Sean Payton had already announced that he would start Brees, who had missed four games, against the Chiefs. The Saints also activated indoor offensive lineman Will Clapp as well as receivers Juwan Johnson, Tommylee Lewis and Li’Jordan Humphrey for the active squad of the training team, while doing away with Garrett Griffin and QB Trevor Siemian. PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers must try to claim the AFC North title with a new offensive line. The Steelers (11-2) eliminated left rookie Kevin Dotson for Monday night’s game against the Bengals (2-10-1). . Dotson suffered a shoulder injury against Buffalo last Sunday after replacing starter Matt Feiler, who lost for the season in the same game, with a chest injury. J. . C.. . Hassenauer, who started two games in the middle earlier this season when Maurkice Pouncey was on the reserve / COVID-19 list, is likely to take over the left guard. Pittsburgh have lost two times in a row after starting 11-0, but can still secure the championship title by taking the Bengals to 12th. LONDON – It’s like the clock was turned back 35 years ago with Liverpool and Everton topping the English league. Seeing Liverpool at the top of the Premier League is a more familiar sight. A 7-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday was the kind of reckless attack that helped Jurgen Klopp end the team’s 30-year title drought last season. Everton hasn’t won the league since 1985 and 1987 when they imposed a runner-up season on the neighbor. A 2-1 win over Arsenal was Everton’s third win in eight days and put Carlo Ancelotti’s side in second place, five points behind the champions. Everton can be overtaken by either Tottenham or Leicester, who meet on Sunday. Staying in the top 4 would be significant not only as a sporting achievement but also financially to Everton, as the club recorded losses of £ 140 million ($ 185 million) in the last fiscal year – also due to the pandemic. Liverpool and Everton are among only four of the 20 Premier League clubs that have fans – albeit 2. 000 – are allowed due to coronavirus restrictions. Southampton also played a lot on Saturday but lost 1-0 to Manchester City. Surprisingly, it’s Southampton in fifth place – one place and one point ahead of Pep Guardiola’s dearly assembled City squad that won the 2018 and 2019 titles. SALAH, FIRMINO DOUBLESA strong win at Palace was a stylish way to end a five-game win for Liverpool that could even begin with Mohamed Salah on the bench. The league’s top scorer scored two goals after two goals in the second half and scored one of Roberto Firmino’s doubles. Salah was one of seven different players who provided the templates – starting with Sadio Mane for Takumi Minamino within two minutes, allowing the Japanese striker to score his first Premier League goal a year after his transfer announcement. Firmino prepared Mane in the 35. Round on goal before scoring before halftime following the release of Andy Robertson. Henderson rolled into the top corner on the fourth seven minutes into the second half after encountering Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cut. Salah’s entry from the bench – a rare point for the striker – began with a support for Firmino to help goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the 68th. Minute to meet. Salah had to be 81. wait to score and nodded off after Joel Matip turned a corner. The Egyptian rolled his 13th birthday. Place in the table to the top left after being set up by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who returned for the first time since July following a knee injury. The ARTETA WOES arsenal is in an even worse condition than when Mikel Arteta took command last December. The London club is on 15th. Place five places worse. It’s seven league games without a win for Arteta, who played for both Everton and Arsenal. Yerry Mina’s halftime header was Everton’s only shot on goal, but it was enough to seal the win after Rob Holding’s own-goal opener was voided by Nicolas Pepe’s penalty. STERLING RESULTS After two draws, Manchester City scored three points thanks to Raheem Sterling, who was hit by Kevin De Bruyne’s cross in Southampton. The South Coast side had only lost one of their last 11 games. ___More AP football: https: // apnews. com / Soccer and https: // twitter. com / AP_SportsRob Harris, The Associated Press
LEVERKUSEN, Germany – Borussia Mönchengladbach’s striker Marcus Thuram spat in the face of an opponent and overshadowed Robert Lewandowski, who won a Bundesliga duel for Bayern Munich against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. Thuram faces a long suspension after spat on Hoffenheim’s defender Stefan Posch after the pair argued in a game that Hoffenheim won 2-1. Thuram went down after a challenge from Posch. Thuram then spat at close range at Posch, who withdrew in shock and wiped his face. Thuram left with Posch to continue the game before the referee finally intervened. Thuram received a red card and Posch a yellow. Thuram’s suspension could last longer than Schalke defender Ozan Kabak’s five games after spat in the direction of an opponent in September but missed. BAYERN BACK ON TOPA Robert Lewandowski’s last-minute goal brought FC Bayern Munich back to the top after a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Two days after being crowned FIFA’s best male player, Lewandowski made the difference against Leverkusen with a goal to equalize the result and the winner in the final seconds of stoppage time. Neither goal was highlight reel material – opponents’ mistakes played a major role – but it was enough to overtake Leverkusen, which had remained undefeated as the surprise league leader. The win was proof of Bayern’s ability to work their way out of trouble. It was the seventh Bundesliga game in a row in which the German champions came back after conceding a goal to collect points. Bayern were two points ahead of Leverkusen and Leipzig. Leverkusen took the lead with a moment of genius and gave it up with a moment of confusion. Patrik Schick opened the classification in style, hovering on the edge of the penalty area on a corner and then hit Nadiem Amiri’s cross with an unstoppable volley in the upper corner. Leverkusen helped Bayern shortly before half-time when goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky collided with defender Jonathan Tah. They watched as Thomas Müller’s cross floated over to the unmarked Lewandowski to get into an empty net. Bayern dominated the second half. In stoppage time, Tah lost the ball, leaving Lewandowski room to hit a shot that was deflected by Edmond Tapsoba and over the diving Hradecky. Coach Hansi Flick praised the strength of his team when he beat Leverkusen, one of only three clubs to beat Bayern since Flick took command 13 months ago. Losing at the last minute was « undeserved and disappointing » according to the judgment of Leverkusen’s coach Peter Bosz. Thuram has set himself on course for a long ban and his team on course for defeat. Referee Frank Willenborg received a signal to consult the video and showed the French player the red card. The result was 1-1, and the 10-man Gladbach conceded another goal and lost. « It’s a shame for the team and a shame for him, » said Gladbach’s team-mate Valentino Lazaro. “It doesn’t fit his character at all. Midfielder Christoph Kramer showed less understanding for Thuram. “His fuses have blown. Of course, that should never happen to him. You can’t excuse that, ”said Kramer. Gladbach’s coach Marco Rose apologized “on behalf of the entire club” and added: “It just doesn’t belong on a football pitch. It goes way beyond the borders. Posch was booked for his part in the altercation, then replaced Kevin Akpoguma, who had loaned Tottenham. He left Ryan Sessegnon for Hoffenheim’s winner from close range in the 86. back. SCHALKE MISERY CONTINUED Even a change of coach did little to ensure that Schalke was successful without a win in the long run. Fabian Klos scored at the beginning of the second half for relegation rival Arminia Bielefeld and beat the team of interim coach Huub Stevens 1-0. Stevens replaced the sacked Manuel Baum on Friday for the game against Bielefeld and the cup game against Ulm on Tuesday, before Schalke find a permanent replacement for the new year. The winless run in the Bundesliga is 29 games and follows Tasmania Berlin’s league record of 31 games in a row without a win from the 1965/66 season. Leipzig fell back in the title race after a 0-0 draw against Cologne. Eren Dinkci scored a 1-0 last minute win for Werder Bremen in Mainz and Eintracht Frankfurt a 2-0 win in Augsburg. ___Fahey reported from Berlin. ___More AP football: https: // apnews. com / Soccer and https: // twitter. com / AP_SportsJames Ellingworth and CiaráN Fahey, The Associated Press

LIVERPOOL, England – Mikel Arteta’s suffering got worse when Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Everton and played seven games without a win in the English Premier League when he was in charge of the London club for a year on Saturday. While Arsenal on Jan.. Everton – for whom Arteta played like Arsenal – are in second place after a third win in eight days. Everton scored after just one shot on goal when Rob Holding’s own-goal opener after Nicolas Pepe’s equalizing penalty was followed at halftime by Yerry Mina’s header.
