A private member bill that would end Ontario summer time has passed third reading in lawmakers.
Jeremy Roberts, MPP for Ottawa West-Nepean, submitted the bill back in October, calling for an end to the biannual practice of changing clocks.
On Thursday, Bill 214 – the Time Amendment Act – received unanimous support and is now being sent to the lieutenant governor for royal approval.
However, the bill won’t come into effect until neighbors Quebec and New York pass similar laws.
Neither Quebec nor New York State have passed daylight saving time laws, but Roberts hopes this bill will spark a conversation.
« Ontario is now poised to lead the way in ending this obsolete practice, » he said in a statement. “I am now looking forward to reaching out to colleagues in Quebec and New York to get them on board this exciting initiative. ”
Academic studies have shown that changing clocks every six months can have serious negative effects, including increased depression, heart attacks, and strokes, as well as higher numbers of fatal collisions.
Roberts says permanent daylight saving time would help encourage more retail activity by giving consumers more hours of daylight in the evening.
Currently, the Yukon, most of Saskatchewan, some locations in Quebec, and some areas of British Columbia do not switch to DST and stay on Standard Time year round.
