World News – CA – Quebec dentist fined for abandoning quarantine in Cayman Islands

. .

Dr. . Pascal Terjanian and his partner Christina Gurunian left the Cayman Islands on Tuesday after having two negative COVID-19 tests.

A dentist in Quebec and his partner were fined Monday 1. $ 500 after Cayman Islands authorities accused them of violating the area’s quarantine rules.

Pascal Terjanian, a controversial dentist practicing in Montreal and Terrebonne, and Christina Gurunian pleaded guilty via video link during a court appearance on Monday.

Upon arrival at the airport on Nov.. . In 13, they were given electronic tracker wristbands and escorted to an apartment complex where they were due to be isolated for 14 days due to the pandemic.

The police were called into the complex after staff informed them that the couple had left the apartment.

Gurunian, 34, did not wear her mask when she arrived at the complex and on several other occasions when she left her apartment to toss garbage in the dumpster, a Cayman news agency reported.

According to court records, managers grew suspicious of Terjanian and Gurunian after they both asked for numerous favors, prompting them to review the complex’s CCTV footage, said Andrel Harris, a reporter for Caymen Compass.

According to the court record Harris consulted, both Terjanian and Gurunian were seen outside their home without their geofencing bracelets and were seen swimming in the ocean at the back of the property.

In an interview with the Montreal Gazette, Gurunian denied many of the allegations. She said the only time she broke the quarantine was when she put trash in the dumpster.

The couple decided to plead guilty to all charges because their aunt died last weekend and she wanted to return to Quebec to be with her family.

« Our lawyer pleaded guilty because otherwise we would not have been able to leave the country, » she said.

She claims two officers came to her door on Monday and informed her of the court’s appearance. She said she has never seen CCTV footage that police claim violated quarantine rules.

Gurunian also denied that she had tampered with her surveillance bracelet. She said Terjanian wore his bracelet higher up his arm because he has a watch on his wrist.

The couple left the Cayman Islands on Tuesday after getting two negative COVID-19 tests. You are not allowed to return to the islands while COVID-19 restrictions exist.

Following the incident, the government is now asking travelers to pass an additional checkpoint at the airport to ensure that the tracking bracelet has been correctly attached. Dr. . Tasha Ebanks-Garcia, the director of Travel Cayman, said in a press release.

Terjanian, 52, once identified as a public threat by the Quebec Order of Dentists, has been the subject of numerous complaints about expensive, sloppy, and painful dental work since 1997.

In 2014, he was suspended from practicing dentistry for 30 months after a disciplinary committee found him guilty of 38 violations. The committee said the suspension was justified « given the gravity of the violations and the apparent lack of remorse . . . and the possibility of relapse, « the Montreal Gazette reported at the time.

The Order has tried to prevent him from practicing for years, but Terjanian continues to appeal the decisions taken against him.

He is due to appear before the Disciplinary Board next Wednesday. He was cited for undermining « the dignity of his profession » between December 2008 and March 2009 and refusing to cooperate with the Order’s investigator.

He has another gig scheduled for January 1997 to perform orthodontic treatments that contradict generally accepted scientific standards in dentistry.

Terjanian has blocked attempts to investigate him by refusing to answer questions or submit proper records, investigator Pierre Lafleur told the Montreal Gazette in 2015.

Court documents show he made many excuses for failing to produce original documents, including being on vacation, sick, and overworked.

In an interview with the Montreal Gazette five years ago, Terjanian admitted that he was cluttered and possibly created an unnecessary root canal.
