World News – CA – Referees drop LSU WR Kayshon Boutte with the ball early

Kayshon Boutte got away with a major mistake in LSU’s game against Alabama on Saturday night in Baton Rouge, La.

Boutte caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from TJ Finley early in the second quarter, making it 21-7 Alabama. But replay showed that Boutte actually let go of the ball before it crossed the goal line.

The officials didn’t review the game and let the touchdown stand. Both CBS rules expert Gene Steratore and FOX’s Mike Pereira said the officers made a mistake.

Big mistake at the LSU. The LSU player released the ball before the ball broke the plane. The ball rolled into the end zone and no one tried to recover. As a rule, the ball should return to where it was fumbled and the LSU would keep the ball. The repetition should have stopped there.

CBS spokespersons said the game was quickly reviewed and approved for a touchdown. Minutes later they clarified further, saying the reason the touchdown was because Jontre Kirklin recaptured the ball in the end zone.

If so, Boutte should have been charged with a fumble, and Kirklin was credited with the touchdown. We like to call this step the DeSean Jackson Special.
