For the second year running, the Raptors have lost a player they wanted to keep with the Los Angeles Clippers.
According to reports, Serge Ibaka has decided to join the Clippers – the same team that tore Kawhi Leonard away from Toronto in 2019 – and signed a two-year deal worth $ 19 million. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Athletic’s Shams Charania, the deal also includes a season two player option.
Masai Ujiri, president of Raptors, and Bobby Webster, general manager, met on Saturday with Ibaka, the 30-year-old center-forward, who played 2½ seasons in Toronto, hours after she came to terms with free agent Fred VanVleet had a four-year $ 85 million contract to keep him in a Raptors uniform.
Ibaka, who had his best NBA season in 2019-20, averaging 15. 4 points and 8. 2 rebounds per game had weighed offers from Toronto, Brooklyn and the Clippers.
The Raptors were reluctant to extend a deal beyond the upcoming season, preferring to keep the salary cap open for a crop of 2021 free agents. They could have paid Ibaka any amount they wanted on a one-year contract, but he decided to get a longer-term contract out of Los Angeles.
Ujiri and Webster must find a launch center for a roster anchored by VanVleet, Kyle Lowry, Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby and Norm Powell.
Marc Gasol, another Toronto free agent, remains a viable option, but the Raptors are unlikely to deviate from their plan of occupying the pitch on short notice and spending more money after the next season.
