Sergio Garcia breaks winless PGA Tour drought with emotional victory - The Spaniard's last PGA Tour victory was The Masters in 2017

Sergio Garcia won the PGA Tour for the first time in three years this week at the Sanderson Farms Championship He narrowly beat Peter Malnati with one stroke thanks to a birdie on the last hole

His last victory on the PGA Tour came at the Masters 2017 where he beat Justin Rose in the playoffs to claim his only major title

Back in Jackson, Mississippi, Garcia has been sublime all week leading the pack in Strokes Won: Off the Tee, Strokes Won: Tee to Green and Driving Distance

Indeed, during the last day, despite their exceptional scores, including the 63 from Malnati, it was Garcia’s ball strike, and two shots in particular that differentiated him from the others

The first came thanks to a towering five antlers which resulted in an eagle And the second came at the 18th hole where, needing a birdie, Garcia made his approach at about 30 inches He then tapped and the victory was hers, her 11th on the PGA Tour

It seemed ironic that Garcia’s last shot was a putt in which he closed his eyes All week Garcia was asked about it with a reporter claiming it was the act of a desperate man. it worked and Garcia said;

« I believed in myself all week I obviously hit a bad putt out of six for par, but I stuck with it, kept going, kept believing, I just kept on going to tell me you’re doing great, just keep doing what you’re doing it’s great You’re not going to do every putt «

It was definitely an emotional victory for Garcia who mentioned Covid and the devastating impact it has had on his family;

“My father has a lot of family in Madrid,” Garcia said “He is one of nine siblings, and unfortunately we lost two of his brothers due to Covid, one at the start Uncle Paco, and last Saturday actually – not yesterday but the Saturday before, Uncle Angel

“You know it’s sad,” he continued. “It’s sad And I know a lot of families have lost a lot more people, but you never want to lose anyone like that, and I wanted to win that for them «
