There are three Canadians in the same pairing at the 2020 United States Open from the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, near New York City. Adam Hadwin of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ontario and Corey Conners of Listowel, Ontario are all golfing together for professional golf’s second major of the year.
In round one on Thursday, Conners shot one over par, while Hadwin and Hughes each shot two over par. Conners is tied for 27th place, and Hadwin and Hughes are tied for 42nd place. There is a fourth Canadian in the field. Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ontario was also at +1 and tied for 27th with Conners.
The leader after the first round is American Justin Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky. The 2017 PGA Championship winner shot a score of five-under-par, which was the best ever score at Winged Foot when the course has hosted a United States Open. It previously hosted the major in 1929, 1959, 1974, 1984 and 2006. The only time a golfer from outside the United States has won the U.S. Open at Winged Foot was 2006, when Geoff Ogilvy of Australia defeated Jim Furyk, Colin Montgomerie and Phil Mickelson by a stroke. Ogilvy’s score was a remarkable +5 when he was victorious 14 years ago. On Thursday, Winged Foot played significantly easier.
