Sarah Fuller made college football history for Vanderbilt University on Saturday, becoming the first woman to attend a Power 5 conference game.

Fuller achieved the feat when she started for Vanderbilt to open the second half of her game against Missouri. She was greeted on the sidelines by high fives from her teammates after the game.

Fuller is a goalkeeper for the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team. The sixty-two-year-old senior helped the program earn its first SEC tournament title since 1994 last weekend after upsetting senior Arkansas 3-1.

Fuller received the call on the Commodores soccer team after several players were quarantined by special teams for COVID-19. Head coach Derek Mason reached out to the Vanderbilt football team for reinforcements.

« Sarah, her nickname is Champ, » Mason said ahead of Vanderbilt’s game on Saturday. « Her teammates on this team call her Champ because she has won two SEC titles. To see her in practice the guys were impressed the first day she came out.

« She was fearless. She plays soccer the way she plays soccer. For us, it’s a blessing in disguise. ”

Fuller wore « Play Like A Girl » on the back of her helmet and entered the field before the competition with the number. 32 – their soccer jersey number.

Prior to Fuller, no woman had signed up for Southeastern Conference (SEC) games or any of the other Power Five conferences, including the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the Big Ten Conference, the Big 12 Conference, and the Pac-12 Conference, qualified.

Liz Heaston became the first woman to play and score college football with NAIA’s Willamette University in October. 18, 1997. Four years later, Jacksonville State University’s Ashley Martin became the first woman to play in an NCAA Division 1 game to score when she scored an extra point against Cumberland University in August. 30, 2001.

In 2003, Katie Hnida of the University of New Mexico became the first woman to score in an NCAA Division 1-A, the highest level in college football.
