The NHL Draft begins Tuesday, and the EOTP has tracked most of the rankings before the Draft
Some rankings correlate more with how the draft goes than others, and no ranking is perfect, so we’ve combined 12 of the most respected draft rankings and used the average of them to get our own rankings
This is our fourth year to do this Last year out of the 140 officially ranked 130 were drafted The highest ranked players not drafted were Daniil Gutik (88th), Billy Constantinou (96th) and Michael Gildon (113th )
The correlation between the ranking in 2019 (140 players ranked) and the actual position in the draft was 083 It was the best performance in the ranking to date

Not all of these rankings ranked the same number of players And not all players were ranked by source This offered a challenge to standardize the rankings
To make it really representative, players who weren’t ranked by a system were given the latest ranking from source 10 This ensured that an unranked player did not benefit more than a low ranked player
As an example, Bob McKenzie ranked 93 players Those who were not ranked by McKenzie (or who did not receive an honorable mention) received a ranking of 103 HockeyProspect ranked 109 skaters Those who are not ranked received 119, and so on
Last year we eliminated both best and last scores This year, because we used fewer sources, rankings are based on the true average
Hockey Prospect ranked goaltenders separately These separate ratings were not used in the average, so goalies have their average based on 11 sources
The « Drop » column shows the difference in average between the person immediately above them in the ranking This is useful for creating groups of players ranked in the same way
You’ll see the averages get closer as you get closer to the bottom This is because a lot of these players weren’t ranked by multiple sources, meaning the averages tended to be more even It also represents the proximity of the players
The « Range » column shows the difference between the player’s highest ranking and his lowest ranking For example, Alexis Lafreniere had a variance of 0 because he was ranked first by all outlets Quinton Byfield had a gap of 1 because his ranking was second or third The biggest variation in the top 31 prospects is Noah Gunler with a difference of 52

The 16th ranked player is Dylan Holloway However, the players are quite close throughout the first round
The draft has several significant drops There is a split after the top 10 and a drop after the 17th Other drops occur after the 27th, 32nd, 39th and 42nd
The draft still has a lot of good depth in the third round and even some third round prospects have first round scores among them What’s also interesting is that every player up to 25th has at least one ranking in the top 15
Here are the 200 best ranked players In total, 257 players qualified for the ranking by having at least two rankings Obviously, only 216 players will be drafted Please note that all names, teams and positions come from the final ranking of the central scouting of the NHL
The Montreal Canadiens have, for the moment, chosen 16, 47, 48, 57, 78, 98, 102, 109, 136, 171 and 188
