The St. Louis Cardinals are a game in another season expected to compete in the National League Central, and as they have for many years, much of their success will depend on Adam Wainwright.
The 39-year-old had an ERA of 3.15 in 2020. For the 14th straight season, he gave up 1.2 or fewer home runs per nine innings.
Wainwright will face Tyler Mahle of the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, who did a great job of breaking the contact a season ago with only 6.4 hits per nine innings, but gave up four walks per nine innings and didn’t get much support while running. His starts.
Cincinnati’s offensive had by far the fewest hits per season at 6.48 Game of a team in the MLB. Every other team registered at least 6.97 hits per game.
The Cardinals back Wainwright with a bullpen, who was 10th in the league in the ERA last season, while the Reds were 16th. So St. Louis should get a win to get another postseason.
