World news – China Uses Anal Swabs To Detect COVID-19: Report

The method can increase detectability and reduce the chances of missing a diagnosis, an official said.

China is using anal swabs to test its residents for COVID-19 in a new wave of the outbreak – and local experts say the method is a more accurate way of detecting the bug, according to a report.

The derriere detection method is becoming more popular in Beijing after a 9-year-old boy tested positive for the highly contagious British variant of the virus last month, Newsweek reported.

But since last year they have been using anal swabs reserved for people living in COVID-19 hotspots like Shanghai. Nasal and throat swabs remain the most popular methods because of their convenience and speed.

« Of course, anal swabs aren’t as convenient as throat swabs, so they’re only used on people in key quarantine areas, » said Li Tongzeng of Beijing You’an Hospital, according to Newsweek. « This will reduce false positives. »

The swabs are inserted 3 to 5 centimeters 1.2 to 2 inches into the rectum, depending on the outlet.

Tongzeng said the method increases detectability and the Can reduce the likelihood of missing a diagnosis.

« We found that in some infected patients, the coronavirus survives longer in their digestive tract or in their excrement than in their respiratory tract, » Tongzeng told the outlet.
